Still obsessed with that non-slight after eight years I see. Not one to bring up the past are you? I like to note happy anniversaries, like the fact that we've just enjoyed an entire decade free of Liberal Democrat gains in Parliamentary byelections.

On the flip side, I believe it is coming up to 59 years since the last LD/SLD/SDP/Liberal loss in a parliamentary by-election.

That was 16 years ago, it was Dunfermline and West Fife. The last in England was Leicester South in 2004.

Romsey was the last time the Liberal Democrats won a seat from the Conservatives in a Parliamentary byelection.

An article in this week's Sheffield Telegraph suggested the by-election would be in "mid-March".

If that article's prediction is correct, Labour will have to move the writ for the Sheffield Brightside & Hillsborough by-election pretty soon, since it is now mid-February.

Maybe Labour would want a by election end of March beginning of April. So the news will be full of big Labour win on the run up to the May elections. Apart from the people who follow elections. Most of Jo/Joe public won't know it is a safe Labour seat anyway. They will like most topics take the 3 second sound bite of big labour win. Thus get the momentum of success.
Just a thought.

I suppose the flip-side of that is that given how safe the seat is, it will be very difficult to exceed expectations, with a significant risk of failing to meet them and then having to deal with the resulting media narrative...

Altogether now:
"(Insert name of safe seat) voting (insert name of party that always wins) is a ringing endorsement of the government/a clear sign of disgruntlement with the government".

Delete as required. Or: (Insert name of safe seat) voting (insert name of party that always wins) should not be a surprise at all, after all it has been won by the (insert party) for the last (insert number) decades. An (insert name of inanimate object) with a (insert colour) rosette pinned on it would have won (insert name of safe seat).

The LibDems are selecting their candidate tomorrow. Rushing around trying to earn a living with a week's notice meant I didn't have time to seek approval, so I'll be breaking my run of candiditure. If I manage to get to the selection meeting I'll post who's been selected.
Tho' TBH I'd budgeted to spend five years saving up a deposit, not less than 12 months!

Speculation it might not happen until May, but if so why are Labour selecting so early? We may know more when parliament resumes next week......

He was a very good candidate in Hallam - even managed to get Ronnie O'Sullivan on side!

Possible, but we will never know. And but for Tories saving his backside en masse, it might actually have come off.
(and there aren't that many other potential gains for Labour locally - its not as if the campaign used lots of manpower that would otherwise go to Nuneaton or Lincoln instead)
