Possible, but we will never know. And but for Tories saving his backside en masse, it might actually have come off. (and there aren't that many other potential gains for Labour locally - its not as if the campaign used lots of manpower that would otherwise go to Nuneaton or Lincoln instead) To be fair to go around saying that the other chap is no better than a Tory is not the best way to neutralise substantial numbers of Tories in an ex-Tory seat. It was probably a chance for Watson's critics to moan at him - which matteted a lot Before Corbyn of course.

He was a very good candidate in Hallam - even managed to get Ronnie O'Sullivan on side! Probably lost you two or three seats by diverting resources from the target seats in a vainglorious attempt to administer a punishment beating on Clegg. Not at all....There were no other obvious winnable seats in South Yorkshire and he came close. Hallam has a strong local party and the number of people who actually work outside their home patch is quite small

She must be the favourite in that case

Speculation it might not happen until May, but if so why are Labour selecting so early? We may know more when parliament resumes next week...... With it being a traditionally safe seat, I doubt that there will be much by way of canvassing records, so we will probably have to hit the doorsteps early. With the decline of Ukip in the north we should hold this one. No reason not to work hard but it's a strong Labour seat in every sense of the word

Was I actually condemning it? I think we were always aware it was a possibility.

No, but it was clearly extremely effective on the 2010 Lib Dem vote, and to judge by the size of the swing not just in the east of the seat. Indeed, he ran ahead of the local slate in every ward and while the biggest portion of that was probably people who voted Green locally and Coppard for parliament, I don't think it's too unlikely that he won a decent share of local Tory voters too.

At this rate its only a matter of time before Chris Williamson puts his hat in the ring.

Is Chris Williamson aspiring to be the John Bickley of Labour?

Is there an official list of candidates so we can keep up with this?
Edit: Ok, official-ish, as there will be nothing official until nominations close.

Two more potential Labour candidates mentioned in this Star article, Solomon Curtis (2015 candidate in Wealden) and someone called Mike Buckley who was apparently on the shortlist for the seat before the General Election.

We're selecting at the end of this month. Why? Because there's a by-election taking place. And if a political party wishes to contest a by-election, it needs a candidate. I hope this helps.

The shortlist last time was Harpham, Leigh Bramall, Jackie Drayton and Mike Buckley. Drayton was the runner up. There were 15 applications. Among the 11 not shortlisted, there was Cllr Hussain.
