I'm guessing the delay in moving the writ is to make this by-election coincide with the elections on 5th May?

I'm guessing the delay in moving the writ is to make this by-election coincide with the elections on 5th May? Most likely. If a by-election is to be held on 5th May the writ will have to be moved between about 29th March and 6th April. The writ is hardly being delayed - it's only just over a month since the sitting MP died. Because of the Easter recess, the writ will probably be moved on Thursday 24 March. If not then it will have to be the first writ issued during the recess for over a decade.

But it could easily have been moved by now?
Therefor I'm guessing Labour want the election on 5th May.

That has been the assumption for a while now, yes.

Harry Harpham passed away on 4th February. Supposing the by-election does take place on 5th May; when was the last time there was such a lengthy gap between the death of the previous MP and a by-election being held to choose their successor?

A byelection 91 days after the previous MP departed isn't so out of the ordinary.
Gerry Adams resigned on 26 January 2011; the byelection was not held until 9 June - 134 days later. Michael Martin resigned on 22 June 2009; the byelection was held on 12 November - 143 days later. John MacDougall died on 13 August 2008; the byelection was held on 6 November - 85 days later. Paul Daisley died on 18 June 2003; the byelection was held on 18 September - 92 days later.

And of course David Taylor died on 26 December 2009 and his North West Leicestershire seat remained vacant until the general election on 6 May 2010.

Most likely. If a by-election is to be held on 5th May the writ will have to be moved between about 29th March and 6th April. The writ is hardly being delayed - it's only just over a month since the sitting MP died. (...) And it's only a couple of weeks since the funeral. Leaving a couple of months or so between the death and the by-election feels an appropriate balance between undue haste and undue non-representation.

The Conservative candidate will be selected on Tuesday 22 March. Do you know who was selected? I don't know. I wasn't at the meeting and I've been busy so I haven't found the time to find out. I'm just about to send some text messages and emails and make some phone calls so hopefully I'll be able to report back soon!

I've been in contact with someone who was at the meeting and they want to wait until it is officially announced, which is fair enough. I don't know why the Party hasn't announced it today which is what I was expecting.

Good, if surprising, to see some Conservative activity in Shiregreen and Brightside. Useless fact: There is a Conservative Club within Shiregreen and Brightside ward ( link)

Is 'metal trader' a colloquialism for 'scrap dealer'?

The Conservative candidate is Spencer Pitfield. The last Spencer P to enter parliament was assassinated on the grounds of the House of Commons. Just saying......
