Wouldn't a small surplus actually involve a lot of work as you'd need to transfer tiny proportions of vote from a lot of ballot papers? The Republic uses a different surplus method of lifting a random sample of ballot papers. A process that I find unsatisfactory.

Biffo's little brother has been re-elected.

Meath West will be 1 Fianna Fáil (who had quota on first prefs), 1 Fine Gael, 1 Sinn Féin.

Biffo's little brother has been re-elected. Shockingly poor vote balancing though and it will serious hamper their chances of taking a second seat.

Cork North-West doesn't seem to have elected its own Healy-Rae. Clearly the "Pork for Cork" message didn't go too well.

Mary Hanafin of Fianna Fáil has apparently conceded defeat in Dún Laoghaire.
Alex White of Labour is eliminated in Dublin Rathdown.
Róisín Shortall of the Social Democrats wins on first prefs in Dublin North-West.

Dublin West (4) is interesting with a three way battle for two seats between Labour, AAA-PBP and Sinn Fein. Joan Burton is in fourth place but ahead of SF. FF seem to have retaken what was their last seat in the capital before a by-election. Leo Varadkar (FG, Health minister and would be economic right Conservative here) has topped the poll barely 150 short of quota.

Mary Hanafin of Fianna Fáil has apparently conceded defeat in Dún Laoghaire I think that's the FF miss that will have the most of their own members cheering.

A Portillo moment could be imminent - Dublin Rathdown has a three way showdown for two seats between 2 FG and 1 Green with only FF transfers (and a tiny independent surplus) to decide it. Alan Shatter is less than 500 ahead of the Green...

Laois is the first complete seat. 1 FF, 1 SF, 1 FG. Charles Flanagan elected without quota.

The first full count - and it's no change of either parties or TDs.
