Reports from Sligo-Leitrim that somebody has lost the keys to one of the ballot boxes, and the count staff are trying to open it with a hacksaw. Someone really is trying to live up to stereotypes, aren't they? I tuned in to a bit of RTE and the presenter was explaining the Healy-Raes' election strategy by saying the one had concentrated on the Northern half and the Western half, while the other had mainly campaigned in the Southern half and the Eastern half.

I am neither surprised, nor disappointed, in Labour's demise. This view would have been unthinkable for me a few years back, but the party needed a good battering. Maybe there is a future for it or maybe not, I think probably there is. As for the resurrection of Fianna Fail, I am not surprised: Dracula proved equally hard to kill and similarly drained the life-blood out of his compliant victims.

The Healy-Raes have continued to deliver today.
Johnny Healy-Rae delivered a calve before going to the count.

RTE reporting that, because of transfers, Fianna Fail could get more seats than Fine Gael, therefore be largest party. That's Fianna Fail, everyone. Come back, all is forgiven. Come the nuclear winter, FF will have their cumann going before cockroaches have even stirred.

Dracula was fairly honest, incorruptible and didn't buy his shirts from Charvet with public money.

RTE report that James Reilly, FG's deputy leader, is in deep trouble.

Just seen the Healy-Raes on RTE. Either that or a good quality spoof.

It may be my connection but the resolution makes the Beard of Powah look seriously odd.

To be fair, if we were going to rule out Irish parties on the basis of culpable incompetence in government, we'd be looking at a SF/AAA-PBP government, with the Healy-Raes as the official opposition.

The outgoing government deserves every bit of this hammering. Trouble is, the people who are benefiting don't exactly... oh well.

First first count coming in, Galway East.
Clear that it will be Canney (Ind) Cannon (FG) and Rabbitte (FF) at the end.

First seat filled:
Seán Barrett (Fine Gael), Dún Laoghaire
Albeit because he's the Ceann Comhairle (Speaker) and got automatically re-elected. Imagine if John Bercow was protected from the electorate.

Dublin Rathdown's first prefs just declared. Shane Ross (Ind) tops the poll, just under quota. Fine Gael have 1.2 quotas and will get one seat. The last seat is between Fianna Fáil and Green Party.

Worth noting that the government ran an utterly catastrophic campaign; Fine Gael's was lazy and complacent (i.e. precisely the wrong line to take given the circumstances) and lets not even talk about the dark self-parody that was 'Labour's'.
