The real story is not quite so simple. According to the Hertfordshire Mercury the Tories have blundered by failing to describe their candidate as 'The Conservative Party candidate', leaving her with no description. The SOPN is here. The vacancy occurred after the Conservative councillor for the ward, Adrian McNeece, failed in his attempt to abolish prayers at EHDC meetings. He also resigned from the Conservative Party. As the by-election is to be held on 17th December, you've posted in (slightly) the wrong thread! The Labour Party should be realistic about their chances, finishing a rather poor fourth in the ward earlier in the year. Whoever is the Tories agent should hang their head with shame. Mark, Lib Dems who inhabit glass houses should not throw stones...... Remember Harrow, 2002?

Not a firm date but I notice the Shropshire website announces the notice of election for Oswestry South will be issued next Friday (18 December). Presumably that means the date will be 11 February.

Bit confused on this one - will it fall under the six month rule? No, because he was last elected in May, and the term has three and a half years to run.

David Boothroyd has highlighted two vacancies in Knowsley which occurred as a result of deaths back in September; on the 14th for St Bartholomews and 24th in the case of Shevington. That means of the now 18 vacancies where there is as yet no date for the by-election, 7 (39%) arose from the death of the previous councillor from mid September to mid October. Authority | Ward | Date of death | Term ends | Knowsley MB | St Bartholomews | 14th September | 2019 | Welwyn & Hatfield BC | Northaw & Cuffley | 14th September | 2019 | St Helens MB | Thatto Heath | 16th September
| 2016
| Knowsley MB | Shevington | 24th September | 2018 | Wolverhampton MB | Bilston East | circa 6th October | 2016 | Bolton MB | Crompton | 9th October
| 2019
| Coventry MB | Lower Stoke | 14th October
| 2018
|
Six of the vacancies are Labour seats in Metropolitan Boroughs, the seventh being in Welwyn & Hatfield a Conservative seat in a District Council. - all the wards are considered safe with majorities ranging from 20% (Wolverhampton) upwards The earliest these elections can be held is now late January or early February. Any Councillor elected in St Helens and Wolverhampton would only serve for some 3 months before the May 2016 elections. However all the vacancies will have local council elections in May so there is a possibility there will be no by-elections in any of the seats with then "double" contests in the other 5.

Ian Monks , Conservative councillor for Alderholt ward on East Dorset DC seems to have resigned as leader of the council and as a councillor . That's right, after full council voted to reject the plans to merge Bournemouth, Poole, Christchurch and East Dorset into a 'super unitary'. There's been a lot of controversy across the councils involved and beyond as this appears to be a wheeze dreamt up and negotiated by the leaders of the council's with little if any input from their colleagues. It was overwhelmingly rejected by 20 votes to 8 at East Dorset. The balance of the council at the vote was 26 Conservative, 3 Lib Dem... www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-dorset-35101147
