Picking a Mickey Mouser is a strange choice for a seat like this. Which will of course be his third time as a by election candidate. Which is probably regarded as unusual in this day and age, but wasn't unusual at all in the past.

Unless my maths is wrong the earliest date for the by-election is 3rd December.

I don't think Harriet would make a good father of the House. She is already Mother of the House, and has already explicitly referred to herself as such (albeit in a light-hearted context).

Unless my maths is wrong the earliest date for the by-election is 3rd December. They'll have to be quick. 10th or 17th December in Oldham is neither light nor warm enough for campaigning.

Who actually moves the writ? Just reading up and it says officially any MP can. But is it ettiqutte for the party of the MP who's seat they will be contesting to move the writ? Could the Conservatives jump in and push it thru quickly? Or in the case of UKIP wanting a quick election Douglas Carswell could ask for the writ to be moved?

In both theory and practice, any individual MP can move the writ for a byelection.
The understanding among parties in the House of Commons is that it is the Chief Whip of the party who last held the seat who moves the writ, and occasions on which this practice was departed from are rare. Where an MP has defected and sought re-election, it seems to be accepted that the Chief Whip of the party they left has the privilege.
In Oldham East and Saddleworth the Liberal Democrat chief whip disgracefully ignored this convention in order to have a slightly earlier byelection (in the depths of winter).

I would have thought December 10 is doable (parliamentary byelections have been held at that time of year before)

I think any time of year is a good time to discuss the inability to distinguish between climate and weather.

Unless my maths is wrong the earliest date for the by-election is 3rd December. Actually I think the 10th will be the earliest date. doktorb🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️ above gave a quote from the Labour Party in Total Politics about candidate selection Funeral details will be announced tomorrow but assuming its this weekend then tomorrow would be too early to move the writ if they want both the shortlist announcement and candidate selection to take place after the funeral. I don't suppose anyone wants to hold an election one week before Christmas so the 10th looks like the most likely date to me. The rule is that 25 days (excluding weekends and bank holidays) have to pass between the writ being moved and the date of the by-election. I'm pretty sure that means the earliest date is 3rd December not 10th December. It used to be 17 days until last year.

Last December by-election was Feltham & Heston I believe? Worth keeping an eye on the twitter feed of this local reporter from the Oldham Evening Chronicle for updates. twitter.com/AlexCareyOC

Selecting a candidate within a couple of days of the late incumbents death? Classy. Much better to wait until after the funeral, eh.

So if the writ isn't moved until after the funeral and we can safely assume 24th and 31st December are not options, this ain't happening until January and probably mid-January at the earliest.
