All that pales into insignificance when you remember that Oldham is the birthplace of the tubular bandage.

I wonder if carlton43 ever met Victor Grayson? Well I met Fenner Brockway who was of much the same generation (of Grayson not Carlton)! This is VERY off-topic but I too met Fenner Brockway, at the 1982 conference in Blackpool. He was kind enough to sign my copy of his book Bermondsey Story, which I happened to take up to conference with me on the off-chance of seeing him.

Anyone remember the early ITV adverts with the slogan "I told'em Oldham"? So no jokes about the request for directions: What's the best way to 'old 'em? Grab 'em by the ****!

I wonder if carlton43 ever met Victor Grayson? Well I met Fenner Brockway who was of much the same generation (of Grayson not Carlton)! I met Fenner on a number of occasions in his later years , I was friendly with Margaret Glover who travelled with him and helped him write 90 Not Out, His final book. He was a fascinating man. Exceptionally principled which lost him his parliamentary seat in Slough, his status in India was almost god-like because of the work he did to bring forward Indian independence. Margaret herself died at the end of last year : she was a portrait painter and peace activist, known also for artwork on each related themes. She emigrated to New Zealand in her mid sixties! I am glad I had the chance to meet them both. We won't see their like again.

Indeed. Winston Churchill and Michael Meacher have in common that they both started their political career by losing seats held by their party in byelections in Oldham, but ending up as the longest serving MP.

Indeed, Royton. Royston is in north Hertfordshire. (Means two Parliaments in succession have their first byelections in Oldham seats) I've made the slight amendment to the thread title. Sorry to hear about Michael Meacher. Seemingly one of the more mild mannered characters of the left, as well as the unofficial stand-in when Tony Benn wasn't available - hence his candidacy in the 1983 Labour deputy leadership contest. I vaguely remember reading a profile of him during the early Kinnock years saying that he was an important bridge between Kinnock and the hard left.

Jon Lansman has responded to the speculation on Twitter Never believe anything until it has been officially denied. Though the alternative explanation is that the Sun printed a load of rubbish. Which is not *that* implausible given its past record, no?

Is the CLP still in Special Measures? What does that mean for selection?

That happens anyway at byelections.

For what it is worth here are the first set of bookies odds In due course I could put up a prediction poll on this thread on request, if anyone here is brave enough to think a party other than Labour might actually win.

Selecting a candidate within a couple of days of the late incumbents death? Classy.

Joint longest in the latter case, as I'm sure Sir Gerald would remind you Chanelling the spirit of johnloony, you'll find that Kaufman took his oath first.
