This is sad news. How many MPs have served longer than Michael Meacher in the HoC? He was elected the same year as Gerald Kaufman. Had he managed to swear the Oath of Allegiance first, he would have been Father of the House and presided over this year's Election of Speaker.

I might be wrong about this, but wasn't David Winnick first elected an MP in 1966, but subsequently defeated and elected again? Obviously(!) rules him out as FoH for the moment.

I met Michael Meacher a few times in the 1980's; a thoroughly decent bloke and a close colleague of my MP, Andrew Bennett. Poignant to note that it is his ex-wife causing the government so much worry over tax credits in the HoL.

Kaufman is just awful.

Yes, he was MP for Croydon South 1966-1970. I can't see him becoming FoH because he didn't return to the Commons until 1979.

He beat Tory MP Richard Thompson in Croydon South (now more like the area that is Croydon Central) and then lost to him in 1970. Fought it again in Feb 1974.... Not elected for Walsall North until 1979. Oh, and like Meacher he lost a by election in his seat (1976) before winning it in a General election.

Um, run that one by me again? Michael Meacher was never a peer. Molly Meacher was divorced from him in 1987, nearly two decades before she was made a Peer.

Her current husband is a peer.

The Father of the House, although not named as such, is set out in the standing orders of the House.

In this particular case it would make no difference as Kaufman is the oldest MP as well.

Sad to hear of Michael Meacher's passing.
In terms of the by-election, I think Labour will win but UKIP will push them quite hard and come a clear second.

Could it be a Tricky election for the Lib Dems? If it is then they will surely lose just as they did in '10 & '15.
