Grantham Barrowby - Lincolnshire CC - due to the resignation of Jo Churchill (Conservative), the new MP for Bury St Edmonds.

The Grantham Barrowby division is made of the former Barrowby and Earlesfield wards of South Kesteven district. If someone is using new wards, it includes Barrowby parish in the Belvoir ward, most of the Grantham Earlesfield ward and a small part of the Grantham Barrowby Gate ward.

Well, it voted Labour in 2004 and it was close in both 2008 elections. Through, it seems the current Cardiff Labour administration is quite rocky and Labour candidate is a barrister living in the proper city (Pentyrch is not really Cardiff, it's a village which was moved into City of Cardiff in 1996, before in was in Taff-Ely).

Oh, it was Plaid. Well, 20% of the ward is Welsh-speaking, which is huge for Cardiff.

Things seem to be going quite well for plaid in this area of Cardiff, they had their best result ever in the 2015 general election in Cardiff West.

I agree, thought of it as solid tory territory. Plaid usually do better in riverside/fairwater - less prosperous and more urban areas of the city. I do think that they had a very good candidate.

The narrowly unsuccessful Plaid candidate was local, Labour's wasn't. Seems to have been an important factor, plus grumbling about the Labour-led council.

Elaboration: it is a small and (very) middle class commuter village physically separated from Cardiff's urban sprawl and was only added to the city in 1995. Its middle classness leans firmly Taffia in tone. Several other wards in that general area also have (or have sometimes had) odd local voting patterns, with the personal appeal of candidates clearly mattering a lot.

Labour do seem to be in meltdown in Cardiff, suspending yet another councillor from the Labour group and botching the redevelopment of the bus station, which looks as if its 4 years behind schedule.
