Surprised to see Jack Hawkins standing for Labour. I'd have thought he'd still be busy with events to mark the 50th anniversary of the release of Zulu.

Yes Jack Hawkins and Tony Bennett !, obviously the top people live there .Sadly the real 'Jack' died many years ago and will not be celebrating the 50th anniversary of 'Zulu'. He wasnt in it much; he played a deranged Pastor (if I remember rightly), better in Ben Hur.Do they have a Coliseum in the Vale ?

He was also the first husband of Jessica Tandy, which I didn't know until recently.

Quite a result in Glenrothes! It's a place I know very well and I'm frankly amazed by the extent of the turnaround. This has always been a solid Labour area. It's Henry MacLeish and Gordon Brown land. The SNP secured over 55% of the vote (how ironic) with a +26% improvement from 2012. Jim Murphy may have been applauded last night in Bolton, but Fife is still a place where he needs to look out for egg on his face. Been on the BBC Scotland news page this morning and guess what, not a cheep about this at all. How strange?....

It was a 13% rise for the Nats in Fife, not 26%. And it should be recalled that Labour had a very good result there last time as the SNP-led council was kicked out of office - the swing since 2007 is pretty modest. Still a good result for your lot, obviously

SNP had 42.5% first preferences in 2012 in this ward and actually just topped the total percentages in the ward (Labour were on 41.2%), so the increase is 12.8%.

And the BBC doesnt traditionally report on council by-elections, unless there is some other story involved. For instance they didnt report the Labour win in Midlothian in November which saw a swing from the SNP to Labour.

As with all statistics, percentages and damn lies, there's much can be shown depending upon your own political stance. I took the +26% from another place and copied without checking (my bad). However, it's very easy to show that 42.5 to >55 is in fact almost a 30% increase. It all depends upon what you are measuring. The oposition will pick whatever reference gauge gives the lowest %.

Statistics are clearly not your strong suit but certainly not as weak as your knowledge of the local area . Your earlier comment that the area is solidly Labour completely ignores the fact that in 2007 the SNP outpolled Labour in the ward by 2 to 1 .

That looks like both a reasonably good turnout and a decent-ish Conservative result behind a very impressive SNP one. Looking like a very good day for the Nats at the moment.
