So why did the NDA perform so poorly in the federal election in Haryana and Maharashtra, but then re-elect their state governments? Personal guess: nationalist voters were complacent and didn’t vote. Maharashtra specific: non-Marathi Hindus being highly offended/mobilised by the way Fadnavis has been treated. Sanjay Raut also deserves a lot of credit for destroying Shiv Sena (UBT) by essentially turning it into a centre left party.

Yet, the incumbent governing is deeply unpopular. And Independents trended more to the opPosition, what is usually a good sign, that the latter will win (but that did admittingly already in Haryana not materialize). The BJP should have imprisoned Soren after the election, and not before it. The tribals closed ranks because of it. I suspect that the NDA is favoured because the tribals don't have enough power for them to get a majority, and the BJP is popular in the non-tribal parts of the state. Just the ST-seats:

Just the ST-seats: I’m not surprised to say the least about the tribal seats. I’m surprised that the BJP didn’t do better in the non-tribal areas.
