The last thing SYRIZA want is to just get an overall majority. Some of their MPs might want to try governing alone which would be almost impossible. Could you explain why it would be almost impossible, please, Richard?

The sensible ones would defect quickly, that's why.
This is making the news a lot more across the Eurozone than it is here.

I assume he is referring to the the very real differences between the '57 Varieties' of ultra leftists and the social democrats contained with the SYRIZA movement.

When you are going to have to make controversial decisions it is very difficult to do so with a wafer thin majority. It might just be possible if you have a disciplined and/or ideologically united party but in the case of SYRIZA you have no chance. Ideally they want about 140 seats so that no government other than one they lead is feasible but where they have to go into coalition with the other centre left parties which would give them a vaguely stable majority and some political cover.

I suspect they'll need Golden Dawn votes to really go nuclear because there are so many wets in Syriza itself.

Draghi being reported on CNBC Europe as saying that Greek bonds are not part of the QE portfolio but will be bought under certain conditions.

It surprises me that Merkel and the 'powers that be' within the EU haven't pulled some rabbits out of the hat to try and give New Democracy a boost. I thought they would pull out all the stops to prevent Syriza from winning. Better to let Syriza win, and give them no money. Then, when a minority Syriza government falls and another election occurs, then you can throw something in to help out ND. I'm clearly in a cynical mood this afternoon.

I thought they would pull out all the stops to prevent Syriza from winning. There have been polls from well over a dozen different polling organisations in the last three weeks and not a single poll has show ND in the lead. I think they'll have given up on ND for the time being and are working on their bargaining position ahead of a SYRIZA win.

They have probably decided that than can live with Greece leaving the Euro.

I thought they would pull out all the stops to prevent Syriza from winning. It's because since the last election the ECB has been busy establishing a monetary cordon sanitaire around Greece so that Grexit does not cause contagion. See eg this piece by Paul Mason on the QE measures: blogs.channel4.com/paul-mason-blog/man-euro-lifeboats-greeks/2921

Well is this poll from Palmos Analysis is accurate they might be out of luck, shows them very close to a majority Fieldwork 19-22 January (changes from 12-15 Jan) SYRIZA 30.2% (+1.5) ND 20.3% (-1.5) Golden Dawn 6.8% (+0.7) To Potomi 5.1% (-1.7) KKE 4.3% (-0.1) PASOK 3.4% (+0.4) Independent Greeks 2.2% (+0.1) Kinima 1.7% (+0.6) LAOS 1.3% (nc)) Other 4.5% (+0.6) Undecided 15.2% (-1.3) Figures adjusted for DK/Refused whilst seat projection shows them just two seats short of a majority tvxs.gr/news/ellada/stis-10-monades-i-diafora-stis-149-edres-o-syriza

If I were the Germans, I'd invite the ungrateful bastards to "s'enculer chez les Grecques*", as the French would put it. * "Get f***ed up the a*** by some Greeks", one of the strongest of the French language's embarrassing lexicon of swearing.

But frankly the Germans are going to have to come to terms with the fact that the Euro 's main problem is that German strength and dominance is killing it. They are going to have to decide how much they really want the Euro. Greece, Spain and Italy will never be Germany. Thankfully.
