Turnout is up from the first round. Turnout at 17:00 in the first round was 34.45%. The same time in the second round turnout was 43.49%. Polls closed at 18:00 French time and counting is underway. Reports that the results could be close. When is result likely to be known? I read a report that the results should be about 7pm our time, shouldn't be long now.

Thanks Devonian. That was very close. Two strong negatives playing across the centre ground. Fascinating and a little disappointing. The seething outpourings of grief over an FN victory would have had a delicious feel for those of us who hate the socialists. At least it was a bloody nose job! If that prick Hollande had not had a fillip from the recent Paris outrages I think he would have been well shafted.

The change in votes for both parties was PS - 1st Round 7,416 2nd 15,504 FN - 1st Round 8,382 2nd 14,601 They must have got a lot of first round UMP voters in the second round and I don't think that would have been possible without the modernisation that Marine Le Pen has undertaken.

It was a squeaker to be sure, but I felt the FN were favourites to win. The PS vote went up by more in the second round which would tend to indicate that a lot of UMP voters took a different view. I note Carlton's point that Hollande has had a fillip but I would venture that the Paris outrages very likely boosted the FN as well - for the opposite reason of course.

I should probably add my own view of the FN, which is that I would have no problem voting for the party of Marine Le Pen but I would be very reluctant to vote for the party of JM Le Pen. Unfortunately they are the same party and I expect it is exactly this kind of baggage that caused the loss of the by election (if you listen to the audio link if the Farage interview I linked to at the top of page 4 of this thread Farage takes a similar view.)

Yes both will have had that boost from the 'outrages' but surely from the same part of the psyche? In the one case it drives people a bit more to the right to make a statement and on the other it drives them to support the current government of whatever stripe, in solidarity with law and order. It certainly accounts for an apparent turnout improvement. The FN is an odd combination now of regional majoritarian power (Provence and especially Greater Nice), a protest vehicle for anti-government and anti-major-parties, a vehicle of EU protest, a sort of BNP, a pro-southern party, an anti-Paris party and a Ruralist and Poujardiste party. That is a large demographic which still has some mileage as Marine is seen or thought to have removed some or most of the previous toxicity.
