Its being reported that the order of the first three candidates is Montel first, Barbier second and Demouge third. The election rules in France state the the first two candidates go to the second round plus any candidate voted for by 12.5% of registered voters. Because of the low turnout its looking like the UMP are unlikely to get to the third round so it would be a head to head between PS and FN.

The PS are calling for the UMP to back Barbier in the second round. Barbier had already said during the campaign that he would back the UMP in the second round if he came third in the first. The UMP have said they will consider their position on the second round at a meeting on Tuesday and will make an announcement then.

Montel is well-known in those parts and is a Montbeliard native- and that counts for a lot round there, given that Belfort and its somewhat notorious native son are just up the road.

I can't see PS losing in the second round irrespective of the UMP endorsement on the first round breakdown of the vote. FN would need to have been much further in advance.

Very strong FN result by local lass. Never mind the UMP central position how do we feel the ordinary UMP voters will split? I would hope that not too many would support the PS and the current economic shambles? Might it be a third drop out and a third each for PS and FN, or is that way off beam?

Who are "Citizens on the rebound"? (rough translation I realise..) More closely translated as "Citizens' Rally" or "Citizens Bounce Back"- another obscure UMP splinter group.

Remain confused as to why some Kippers are so happy to identify with the FN. Dispiriting.

The FN have their own version of the "LibLabCon" jibe - they refer to "L'UMPS" as the governing party throughout the 5ème Republique.

Remain confused as to why some Kippers are so happy to identify with the FN. Dispiriting. Especially the one who supported Franco retrospectively!

Clearly an accurate description of the situation Alain Juppe has urged voters to vote PS in the second round. But Sarkozy hasn't. And in any case there's a world of difference between the decent parties briefly working together in unfamiliar circumstances to oppose a semi-fascist party, and the claim that they are in effect the same movement.
