Of course it's hysteria, everything in a by-election trends towards hysteria, especially in the last few days. However I totally dislike Thornberry and an happy to see her get her commeupance (aside from personal abuse, of course).

IME 'white van men' are among the least predictable in their voting preferences. In Chelmsley Wood they have even been persuaded to vote Green.

Yes, but you live in McIslington, don't you? Are you aware that there is life outside your sneering upper middle class little world? I have lived in lots of places including Manchester, Brmingham, Coventry, Leicester. I remain suspicious of anyone who feels the need to plaster their house or car with flags outside of say a major football tounament. You only have to look at Belfast and Derry or even parts of Scotland to understand why. What are they trying to say? "Engerland, Engerland!" Probably.

It's the closest thing to a bien-pensant dog whistle I've ever seen. Since when has white van man voted Labour anyway? Their views hardly fit ours. There have always been a right wing nationalistic Tory working class vote. Alf Garnett lives.... That's not what I was getting at- I was implying that it was a dog-whistle to the kind of people who choose to follow her. There will be people out there who think it's hilarious that there are people with white vans and England flags (or Scotland or Wales flags for that matter) actually exist in real life. It was an invitation to sneer- and the sense of being sneered at is what has driven so many people to UKIP already.

Thornberry always sounds as though she's talking down to someone, so that comes as no surprise. Nobody likes being sneered at or talked down to, or not being taken seriously.

I agree with your comments, it does make her look out of touch with what could well be traditional labour voters, however she might be making the point about plummeting house prices in the event of a UKIP win.

Neo-classical portico on small houses, large white van to front and decked out with Cross of St. George. Probably upwardly mobile, football enthusiast, small business owner in Essex or Kent who is patriot and possibly one of our supporters? Luuuv.....eeeeeeeet! I would bet on an ex-BNP member. No, John, probably not.....the van is too clean.

I would like to thank Emily Thornberry for her service to UKIP and showing how they are close to working people and how they are one of them. The Gift that keeps on Giving. Everytime I see her on TV I can feel the votes for us ratcheting up in such a satisfactory manner. It nearly takes away my deep desire to take a baseball bat to the set. We are such a lucky party with the opposition we get........Cameron, Clegg, Miliband, Thornberry, Paris, Clarke...........It is all so deeply satisfying. Perhaps God is on our side?

Was at a licensing hearing tonight with a Tory councillor who spent Saturday in Rochester. He was very gloomy.

Oh, no doubt. Probably raises the probability from 0.04% to 0.06%. If John wants to bet on odds like that, his bookie is likelier to be a rich man that an ex-BNP member. Is every throwaway comment on here going to be statistically analysed to death? Well probably...........especially if someone from UKIP threw it...........and you make a clean catch.

I fly the flag of St George on April 23rd, the Cornish flag on St Piran's Day, the Manx flag on Tynwald Day, the Sussex flag on Sussex Day (duh), the White Ensign on Trafalgar Day, the Portuguese flag on 3 or 4 national holidays a year (Carnation Day, etc.) for my son, and the Stars & Stripes on July 4th for my stepmother. I'm about to lose carlton43, and probably others... on Europe Day I fly the European flag. I also have French, Breton and Welsh flags, which have been given to me, but I have no reason to fly them.

You are being confused........easy to do in superheated discussions. My sole point is that what I regard as guest workers should never to regarded as new British citizens and permanent residents with rights to bring in their entire extended families. The deal should be along the lines of 'You look to be a decent sort with skills we actually want AT PRESENT. Please come and work and if you like us and we like you we might offer you citizenship, all our benefits and certain closely defined rights to import a limited number of family members, when we decide to do so. If you become unemployed, disruptive or a cost to us we shall ask you to go. If economics change and we have a lot of citizens unemployed we may also ask you to go.' Its all our call. Outside the EU rules, there are no rights to come or to stay. But your view is irrelevant. They were not allowed entry as "guest workers" and therefore should not be given that status retrospectively. Yes I know my view is always irrelevant by definition of it being 'mine'. After Brexit we make whatever rules we like to suit us.
