Yes, but you live in McIslington, don't you? Are you aware that there is life outside your sneering upper middle class little world? I have lived in lots of places including Manchester, Brmingham, Coventry, Leicester. I remain suspicious of anyone who feels the need to plaster their house or car with flags outside of say a major football tounament. You only have to look at Belfast and Derry or even parts of Scotland to understand why. What are they trying to say? You can remain suspicious of them. You can, as I do, not see the point of fluttering a bedraggled flag from a window. But does that make them likely to be ex-BNP members?

Well it makes them statistically more likely to be former BNP members than average, but it would still be quite unlikely. If we're going to be pedantic.

British flag? Reminds of that bit in the film "The Man who never Was" when the intelligence officer thanks the bereaved father for his son's body and says "England will be proud of him". The father gets a bit testy and says "My son was a Scotsman sir. Why do you people say England when you mean Britain?". Unfortunately this bit was made up and the body was supposedly of a Welshman who had been living on the streets... except that probably turns out not to be true either...

Probably raises the probability from 0.04% to 0.06%. If John wants to bet on odds like that, his bookie is likelier to be a rich man that an ex-BNP member.

I would like to thank Emily Thornberry for her service to UKIP and showing how they are close to working people and how they are one of them. Well she represents a seat which is almost the least likely to go to UKIP in the whole country and will certainly have few people defecting to it from labour. Her world view and the world view of others in labour will be very different.

Of course - and I speak here as confirmed white trash even if I do have multiple degrees - the automatic assumption that it is absolutely normal to have ridiculous faux-classical columns and massive flags on the front of your house is also kind of snobbish.

This story seems all a bit of ludicrous hysteria to me.
Shouldn't some of the many dozens of journalists in Rochester & Strood right now be reporting on who actually lives in the property?

Try the suburban Hindu Indian version of working-class-kid-done-good. Basically the same, but the columns are encrusted in gold. Fantastic. (If a little off-putting when trying to to learn to reverse round a corner, as I was in Pinner about 7 years ago.)

If hanging loads of England flags was a sure-fire sign of BNP members, Nick Griffin would be Mayor of Stoke-on-Trent.
I wouldn't be caught dead with an England flag hanging out of my window, but it's not a surprise to see areas where it's common. Hell, I've even seen in parts of Liverpool.

I remain suspicious of anyone who feels the need to plaster their house or car with flags outside of say a major football tounament. There was an England-Scotland match yesterday. Given that the flags belong to a West Ham fan its not unlikely they were put out for that occasion. Is that acceptable or would that only be OK if they were taken down on the stroke of midnight on the day of the match?

So if your party achieves its goal of the UK leaving the EU, you think that we should expel all existing EU migrants (the vast majority of whom are gainfully employed and contributing to our economy)? Or am I misreading your opinion? You are being confused........easy to do in superheated discussions. My sole point is that what I regard as guest workers should never to regarded as new British citizens and permanent residents with rights to bring in their entire extended families. The deal should be along the lines of 'You look to be a decent sort with skills we actually want AT PRESENT. Please come and work and if you like us and we like you we might offer you citizenship, all our benefits and certain closely defined rights to import a limited number of family members, when we decide to do so. If you become unemployed, disruptive or a cost to us we shall ask you to go. If economics change and we have a lot of citizens unemployed we may also ask you to go.' Its all our call. Outside the EU rules, there are no rights to come or to stay. But your view is irrelevant. They were not allowed entry as "guest workers" and therefore should not be given that status retrospectively.

It's the closest thing to a bien-pensant dog whistle I've ever seen. Since when has white van man voted Labour anyway? Their views hardly fit ours. There have always been a right wing nationalistic Tory working class vote. Alf Garnett lives....

Except he was probably a Canadian soldier as the Welsh guys body was rotten. The Canadians body was picked up in Greenock and put on sub.
