There was a more famous later byelection - for every seat on Clay Cross UDC, after the sitting councillors were surcharged and disqualified for defying the Housing Finance Act. The byelection was on Saturday 2 March 1974 - only two days after the general election - but had a turnout of 71.5%. ...and only 29 days before the council was abolished and became part of North-East Derbyshire.

Meltham UDC 1946-1972:- www.dropbox.com/sh/bao6z1nkwg7g341/AABXeeQu4KlOUc1mb-Q2-v-ha?dl=0A small UDC located between Colne Valley and Holmfirth. (it formed part of a WRCC division containing Marsden and Linthwaite). Unwarded and probably unique (for the area) because there were contested elections every year. (The contestation level in both the Calder & Colne Valleys for the 'Little Elections' was disappointing).

The very first link (1946) has one of the elected councillors as "Miss Hilda Beatrice Haigh" who was re-elected in 1949, and defeated in 1952. One of my cousins is a Hilda Haigh, and another Hilda Haigh was a distant cousin from two generations ago. The Hilda Haigh in those results looks too old to be either of those, but it is possible she might be another distant relative. Edit: P.S. I have been informed by a relative that the abovementioned Hilda Haigh was indeed aunt of my distant relative.

(The contestation level in both the Calder & Colne Valleys for the 'Little Elections' was disappointing). Thanks for posting these. My first wife, Ann Swaine (1955-2000), was a Melthamer. Interesting that certain Labour candidates clearly had a personal following here, sometimes polling twice the number of votes as their party running mates. I think I am right in remembering that this sort of thing was sometimes carried on into the Holme Valley North ward at Kirklees, where I think a Mr Lyons was comfortably elected one year, only for Labour to fall back dramatically the next when someone else was the candidate, and the decline was not due to national swing. Hopefully you can expand on this.... We were both members of the Conservative Club, in our opinion the nicest place in the village to buy an inexpensive pint. Ann had been banned (!) from the Liberal Club some years before we met......

Elland UDC from 1937 (the pre-war amalgamation) to 1974:- www.dropbox.com/s/93wjc5r6i3ul19l/Elland%20UDC%201937%20to%201974.pdf?dl=0Too many uncontested returns especially from the mid-1950s. All parties struggled to find suitable candidates. The council size (27) was probably too many but that's a long story. A handful of former councillors survive. Our former County Alderman is thankfully still with us. The final election date clashed with the FA Cup (Leeds beat Arsenal!!!). There was a fear that folk wouldn't turn out to vote:-

Colne Valley UDC 1946-72:- www.dropbox.com/sh/hgsiuey25wh1r5i/AAD6J2YPKLF8-IRcz5RABKZba?dl=0The quality of the ink and reels could be better. A 25 member council. Four wards represented by six councillors so two up for election every year. The fifth ward (North/Scammonden - once its own UDC) was represented by one councillor elected every three years. A fair chunk of Scammonden is now under water.

Timetable of local elections in 1972:-
Tuesday 2nd May - Scotland Thursday 4th May - England & Wales County Boroughs and Boroughs plus 74 UDCs Friday 5th May - 8 UDCs Saturday 6th May - 165 UDCs Monday 8th May - 70 UDCs Tuesday 9th May - 72 UDCs Wednesday 10th May - 21 UDCs (Unclear how many RDCs polled in 1972. 112 UDCs didn't poll in 1972 - not their 'all up' year).
The rolling totals in the national press rarely tallied.
