The Conwy resignation was due to a new job in the USA, and the Merthyr one due to ill health so not things that could be foreseen.

Future byelection arrangements appear to be as under: 15 November - 15 * Conwy CBC, Deganwy (Ind resigned) Pending not yet called - 20 (some are provisionally scheduled for 15 November) * Merthyr Tydfil CBC, Cyfarthfa (Ind resigned 10 July) Which means (if I have my memory correct) we will have had at least four resignation by-elections since the local elections. Why do people stand for the elections then, if they are going to resign less than six months after the elections? One reason is folk who get elected when they don't expect to. Others have unsympathetic employers, spouses who inconveniently get jobs in foreign countries, businesses that go bust...some are DoktorB ;D

So, N2R, was she as awful a candidate as was widely reported at the time?? No, not really. She was just badly advised by her minders. In fact, the Tory campaign's wheels came off before it even got started and she got the blame, I think. The photo of her in Undercliffe Cemetery, which was used on her election address was just symptomatic of everything wrong with their campaign...and it just got worse on a visit to a mosque...just bad minding and bad campaign management. In total contrast of course to Terry Rooney, who was minded-out of the campaign. "Shut'im up and he'll walk it", seems to have been Labour's campaign strategy.....and it worked....for the next 15 years!

The Conwy resignation was due to a new job in the USA, and the Merthyr one due to ill health so not things that could be foreseen. Conwy, Deganwy ward, looks like it could be quite an interesting one. The conservatives have nominated Julie Fallon-Smith, who since starring in this: www.conservatives.com/Video/Conservatives_TV.aspx?id=3e3a6607-4141-4eb7-b977-af5428a370aahas since tried twice to be elected to the county council. The former Independent council leader, Goronwy Edwards, who unexpectedly lost his seat in Caerhun in May, is going to attempt a comeback. He's a former Tory. The Lib Dems have nominated the same candidate who stood in the ward in May, and there are rumours of a strong Plaid candidate too.
