I agree that Rowe's pitch was unimpressive and Khan's was very good. That being said there is no way I could possibly vote for Khan. Khan's statement certainly gives you a good idea of his experience, both personal and vocational, but it doesn't give you a good idea of where he'll go from here as an administrator. Rowe's statement is pretty bland, agreed.

Candidate statements booklet arrived today, addressed to "the resident", rather than to me. It would have been nice to receive it before my postal vote. I wonder how many people have sent off their postal vote before receiving any information about the candidates. Why are they not delivered with the polling cards/postal votes in an envelope as per the London Mayrol elections?

We had a leaflet from the Tory candidate before the postal vote arrived. Not heard from anyone else.

I had the booklet today. I have realised that I am not on the early Bankfurt to get to Berlin, but one that in theory means that I could have just enough time to vote before we depart. However, as I will be honest and feel uninspired by all the candidates and HWMBO will need corralling to get him to the aircraft on time, I suspect such an event will not pass.

I am, of course, in the amusing position of having served with three of the four contenders. Two on CENTRO and one on BCC.

Candidates booklet arrived here today. Housemates had indeed put it, unopened, straight into the recycling pile. After saving it and showing it to them, both housemates have decided no candidate is worth voting for... And this is a pretty political household!

Before it arrived, had their brains registered the fact that the election is happening at all?

Text received from Unite: "Stop the Tories & UKIP privatising W Mids Police. Only voting Labour will keep the Police public. Vote Labour on 21st August." Obviously went out to all members in the area, even those of us who opted out of the political fund and, in the process, told the union that we didn't want to support Labour.
Also seen a few glossy Labour leaflets either sticking out of the outside of letterboxes, or delivered to the ground just outside the front door. Didn't read them in any detail, but did notice Geoffrey Robinson's face. I definitely haven't had one through my own door.

Do you think the average Unite member believes the Tories and UKIP seek to privatise the Police?

Do you think the average Unite member believes the Tories and UKIP seek to privatise the Police? I think David Jamieson is trying to persuade voters that they would at least consider some part-privatisation, and that Unite are repeating his campaign rhetoric. Everybody knows that the Tories are, generally speaking, in favour of privatisation. And union members are more likely than the average person to be worried about the Tories privatising things. So it's inevitable that some members will believe the text, whether or not it's well-founded. As for UKIP, your candidate is running on his credentials as a business owner. Which makes it a lot easier for anybody who's actually read his candidate statement to believe he would go down the privatisation route.

What would privatising the police actually involve? I'm getting tired of hearing 'privatised' bandied about when 'contracted out' is the correct term. I wonder which parts of the police service, apart from crime labs and back office stuff, can be contracted out. Canteens? Vehicle maintenance? Hardly earth shattering stuff.

Do you think the average Unite member believes the Tories and UKIP seek to privatise the Police? Or more pertinently do they believe that a mere PCC has that kind of authority. I haven't yet decided if I will cast my ballot in favour of a candidate or whether I will spoil it.

The average Unite member is savvier than some people seem to want to give credit for. I say that as a GMB member.

It's their leadership that I hold in contempt. Anyway, anybody want to try and convince me why I should vote for their party's candidate in this election.

Been all over Sandwell, Walsall and Birmingham today. Only signs of electioneering were a few Labour lamppost posters here and there. We did also get a glossy Labour leaflet today. All things considered, it doesn't seem like anyone but Labour has bothered at all. Would not be entirely surprised if the turnout ends up being under 10%.
