I think you may be exaggerating the paucity of UKIP organisation in Newark. The local branch was set up in March 2013 (source: www.newarkadvertiser.co.uk/articles/news/UKIP-targets-town-voters ) and it did manage to contest all the Nottinghamshire County Council divisions in the constituency a few weeks later, doing reasonably well in some of them. They didn't contest Bassetlaw, Tuxford which was a straight fight between Con and Lab. (Result: Con 1851, Lab 1236).

which is the right decision but should have done it yesterday and now looks like he 'bottled' it like at Eastleigh.

Well I was going to muse that if he stood and won (which in a post successful Euro campaign, was distinctly possible) Farage would sit in parliament and soon be joined by a handful of Tory defectors. His win would be enough to panic enough of them teetering to convince them that they could a) win as UKIP and that they could b) lose to UKIP is they didn't defect. But any other UKIP winning wouldn't have that same pulling power to those Tories.
But then that would entail Farage thinking strategically and that seems well beyond his mental capacity. His lack of picking a Kent seat to run in by now also shows this.

yes I find it so strange he has yet to pick a seat, any other party leaving a possible winnable seat this late is called poor organisation. surely South Thanet is very easy for him to pick or is he still trying to help a Tory keep the seat ?

of course he has had weeks to think about this as it was always likely Mercer would have to stand down.

Can the Tories delay this election as long as possible to let the Euro's pass ?

Can the Tories delay this election as long as possible to let the Euro's pass ? They don't have a choice - it's now past the deadline for calling it on 22 May. Assuming Mercer is appointed Crown Steward this morning, and if the writ was moved today, polling day would be 5 June.

I would imagine that the local elections officer would want something of a break after the Euros before tackling a parliamentary by-election.

Sorry David, I meant, can they delay for their own reasons to say the end of June, beginning of July or is the timetable set ?

David is saying than, if they move the writ today, the election would be on 5 June. There is no reason to believe they'll move it today, through.

I would have thought mid-July is probably the most likely time.

Thus my last point. A by-election at this stage in this parliament bearing in mind the complete collapse in support for the Liberal Democrats and reduced support for the Conservatives must surely result in the greatest degree of confidence by the Labour Party that they can win this by-election against all comers. If Labour aren't seriously challenging for this seat at this time their candidates in the real marginals must be bricking themselves in case they've wasted years of their lives for nothing Nice spin, which I have no doubt we will hear much more of in the coming weeks. The reality, however, is that outside the eponymous town there is genuinely little potential for Labour in this seat - and (just like UKIP) we are weak organisationally too.
