That's because other parties had a message. UKIP have got anger instead.

Talk of UKIP around the 30% mark for the by election. If so this would be their highest score in a parliamentary election.

The sad truth about UKIP is that they simply don't get it. Topping the poll in the Euro elections is nice but electing 24 UKIP MEPs is ultimately meaningless. This is an election that really counts and the Conservative Party have thrown ever resource available to them in to the battle. But how telling Richard that they need to do so in a very safe seat where UKIP were nowhere in 2010 and where they have little or no history or on site ground activism. No other party in the last few decades could do this to all three parties of government. Well yes, UKIP can come second to all three major parties or put it another way they can lose to all three major parties. What they seemingly can't do is win. With all their money, all their publicity, all their activists they can't even achieve once what George Galloway has done twice, what a political neophyte in Kidderminster did twice and what David Peter Law did in a supposedly ultra safe Labour seat. After 20 years they are still a pathetic bunch of losers. They are impotent, weak, useless and a total liability to the causes that they purport to represent. Their members, who are mostly good people, have been betrayed by a leadership that neither knows how to win, or even wants to.

Almost inexcusable to make a mistake about such a fine result but as usual with my after midnight posts I blame the alcohol. As for the Greens, I try and avoid mentioning them where ever possible.

I wonder if politicians are covered by the same rules as footballers who can't bet on football matches. Could Politicians be seen to have insider knowledge? Just putting the question outthere. Footballers are allowed to bet (indeed, a premiership player was formerly someone I dealt with regularly), just not on games they're playing in not that it stops some using proxies. There's at least one MP who has a note on his account urging caution on political bets. As of next year, no they (English players) aren't. m.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/27511546

Listening to the car radio, reporter said Labour supporters were saying they were going to vote Tory to stop UKIP and LibDems were going to vote Labour, so what will we learn tonight - Elvis is King - or not. Notice Socialistunity.com is down, nothing to do with by election but not worth a unique thread.

When there was a by-election in newark in 1840, the Liberal candidate was 9 votes away from coming last. The Lib Dems might manage to do even better than that this time.

That is a very good result for the Conservatives and a considerable disappointment for UKIP. A majority of 7000 and 45% is a sound and respectable result. UKIP failed to haul the majoity well down below 5000 nor did it gain 30% and that is not good enough. It pinpoints the difficulties when the turnout goes up. At the GE we face turnout of 60%+ and that will present a challenge to UKIP. Newark is very old fashioned conservative and they have proved to be less fickle and more solid than most of the coastal east and south. The Conservative campaign was well organized and impressive and it paid off. Congratulations to all my Conservative friends on this site for an excellent contest. You beat us fair and square and rather too well.
We are in another good second place and these are building across the country in many different types of constituency. That may have to be good enough in this phase of development? Building a sound base of grassroots and local politicians is a start. A large national vote and more strong seconds will place us well for by-elections and the next round of GE. In 2015 I still see a good chance of taking a few seats and doing considerable damage to each of the majors in particularly vulnerable seats. I have good hopes of attacking Labour if they win next year, as they will become increasingly vulnerable as they have to take hard decisions. The fight goes on and the strategy mutates.

Newark - from memory this is the first time Greens have beaten LDs in a parliamentary by-election since Glasgow Central in June 1989.

Newark - from memory this is the first time Greens have beaten LDs in a parliamentary by-election since Glasgow Central in June 1989. It's 1989 all over again in another way. It's the first time since then that the Conservatives have held a seat in a Westminster by-election whilst in government. This is a very encouraging result for us and much better than expected, no doubt about it. Congratulations to UKIP on a strong increase and coming second. In all, a good day for the Right as a whole. Poor for Labour and terrible for the LibDems, who I thought would get over 5%. The independent did well to beat the Greens and LibDems, almost saving his deposit. The OMRLP got 9 times as many votes as the PSP. What next for Andrew Stott's leadership?

A very pleasing result. My only problem with it is that this will give the leadership more confidence in their policy of trying to control everything and everyone all of the time. In the long term it isn't a good strategy.

Notice Socialistunity.com is down, nothing to do with by election but not worth a unique thread. Seems surely more likely that some of all 3 parties voters went ukip while quite a lot of the lib Dems in posh Southwell went Tory.
