Pendle - Old Laund Booth ward - on 3rd July. Councillor John David was leader of the LD group on the Council and had represented OLB and its predecessor larger ward for 28 years. He resigned due to a sudden deterioration in the condition of his kidney, transplanted 17 years ago. This is a small single member ward and consists of the parish of OLB, better known as Fence. At the last election in 2011 the result was: LD 367, Con 357, Lab 32. The LD candidate Brian Newman is Chairman of the OLB Parish Council.
This will be an interesting contest. We wait to see if UKIP (or anyone else) intervenes.

The disqualification of a Canvey Island Independent Party (CIIP) councillor led to an interesting tie at the Annual Meeting of Castle Point Borough Council on Wednesday.
The Conservatives lost control of the council on 22 May - following 5 UKIP gains - Con 20, CIIP 16, UKIP 5
The balance at the Annual Meeting reverted to casting vote control - Con 20, CIIP 15, UKIP 5 - and the council elected a Conservative mayor and deputy mayor.
It is understood that CIIP and UKIP have accepted that the council will continue under minority Conservative control.
