Manningtree and Mistley are almost the same settlement, both being based on the Stour estuary. Manningtree is famous for being one of the claimants to the title of Britain's smallest town, but that's only if you measure it on the (somewhat misleading) parish boundaries. It's also known for its association with Margaret Thatcher in her years as a research chemist. Little Bentley and Tendring are villages in the centre of the Tendring peninsula, neither of which particularly looks towards Manningtree. The comments on the last LGBCE review are interesting - essentially everybody suggested the ward boundaries were truly illogical, in response to which the LGBCE did it usual trick of agreeing but confirming its recommendations.

But why Tendring Peninsula is named after that small village?

The peninsula is named after the Tendring Hundred, which was an Anglo-Saxon judicial unit. The reasons for the naming of hundreds are never particularly clear, but the best guess is probably that it was used as a meeting place because of its location in the centre of the peninsula.

The Hundreds (or Lathes, or Rapes, or Wapentakes in some counties) still existed and had legal significance until the 19th century. The last thing which they were responsible for was paying for the costs of riots, which was removed from them in the 1880s and transferred to the police.

Rapes in Sussex are not the same as hundreds, they (hundreds) are the next level.down sent while on the move somewhere

There used to be a bar in Sheffield called the Wapentake.

Call me old-fashioned, but I wouldn't want to drink in a bar whose name refers to the public brandishing of offensive weapons.

Sheffield was in the Wapentake of Strafforth and Tickhill (Upper division).
At the moment I'm in the Ossulstone Hundred, and probably not all that far from Oswald's Stone itself, assuming its likely fate after 1869.
