RIP Gerry Ryan. I was greatly saddened when I read the news, although it is sadly not a surprise in that he had been very ill for a long time. He was only 57, and was the candidate in Croydon Central in 2010.

There are 2 by-elections remaining in January 2015, including one for 2 seats, and 5 in February. A further 20 vacancies are known where the election has as yet no date, although it is increasingly unlikely 9 will see a by-election as they are to be contested again in May. So far 21 vacancies have been identified as classified under the "six month" rule.
There were 22 by-elections ahead of the main elections in 2011, the same period in the local council election cycle as 2015, which may be a benchmark for the number expected this year.
28th January - 1 West Berkshire UA, Purley-on-Thames - Conservative died - 4 candidates: Con, Lab, LD, UKIP

* seats that will be contested again in May 2015. Whilst not covered by the "6 month" rule, experience from earlier years suggests some may be left unfilled until May particularly as a number are being re-warded in May.

No SOPN available yet for Hengoed where nominations closed yesterday but it seems at least a three way fight. cneifiwr-emlyn.blogspot.co.uk/2015/01/hengoed-by-election_84.html Interestingly (well, as these things go!) Labour have selected the late councillor's widow for the county vacancy and People's First have selected his nephew.

The usual conventions of decency, according to Mr Reed, presumably include sending round Labour Party goons to grieving families in order to pressure them into giving their acquiescence in those cases where Labour want to call the election before a funeral.

If this is a reference to Jim Dobbin's family, you couldn't be more wrong. It was Pat's decision, under no pressure, to agree to the writ being moved. Nobody, and I mean nobody, has ever pressurised Pat into anything. Yes, I am still smarting over Jim's death.

It's Mad Winston's lot... or is he still suspended? He probably thinks his party are heading for some sort of whirlwind victory. The UKIP fox is in the hen house CHAMP...

The Conservative Councillors' Association are under the impression that the Rhyl South West byelection will be on 19 February. I just called Denbighshire County Council and they confirmed no date had been set. (They were suffering from some confusion that if they didn't get ten names requesting a byelection by 9 February, there wouldn't be one. That applies to the Town Council vacancy but not to the County Council.)

When I rang this morning I was advised to try again on Monday when people who did not work on Fridays were due to be in.

It looks like 5 by-elections during February and 6 so far identified in March. A further 14 vacancies are known where the election has as yet no date, although it is highly unlikely 9 will see a by-election as they are to be contested again in May, along with an impending resignation so the vacancy can be filled on 7th May. So far 22 vacancies have been identified as classified under the "six month" rule.
There are so far 16 by-elections for 17 seats scheduled in the January to April 2015 period, including the 5 for 6 seats already held, ahead of the main elections in May. A total close to the 22 contested during the same period in 2011 looks likely.
5th February - 1 Derbyshire CC, Brimington - Labour died - 5 candidates: Con, Lab, LD, UKIP, Ind
12th February - 3 Cambridgeshire CC, Bar Hill - Conservative died - 5 candidates: Con, Lab, LD, UKIP, Green Harlow BC, Mark Hall - UKIP resigned - 5 candidates: Con, Lab, LD, UKIP, Green Shropshire UA, Oswestry East - Conservative resigned: 4 candidates: Con, Lab, LD, Green
19th February - 1 Carmarthenshire UA, Hengoed - Labour died - 6 candidates: Con, Lab, UKIP, PC, People 1st, Ind
5th March - 4 Brent LB, Kenton - Conservative died Camden LB, St Pancras & Somers Town - Labour died Croydon LB, Selhurst - Labour died Essex CC, Bocking - UKIP died
12th March - 1 Western Isles UA, West Side & Ness - Independent died
26th March - 1 Maray UA, Buckie - Independent died
Current known vacancies where by-election not yet called - 5+1+9 Denbighshire UA, Rhyl South West - Labour died 4th January Fife UA, Glenrothes West & Kinglassie - Labour died 16th January Gwynedd UA, Cadnant - Plaid Cymru died 29th January Newcastle-under-Lyme BC, Clayton - Conservative died 20th January Vale of Glamorgan UA, Llantwit Major - Llantwit Major First Independent died 4th January
Swansea UA, Cockett - Labour due to resign 20th March so by-election coincides with General Election
* Fenland DC, Manea - Independent disqualified 8th November * Herefordshire UA, Mortimer - Conservative died 6th November * High Peak DC, Limestone Peak - Conservative died around 15th September * Lichfield DC, St John's - Conservative died 14th September * Rushcliffe DC, Manvers - Conservative died 26th September * South Oxfordshire DC, Goring- Conservative died 21st September * South Ribble BC, Bamber Bridge West - Labour died 1st November * St Edmunsbury BC, Haverhill East - Conservative sitting as UKIP died 2nd October * Waveney DC, St Margaret's - Labour died 8th November
* seats that will be contested again in May 2015; it is highly likely they will be left unfilled particularly as a number are subject to re-warding.
Vacancies covered by the "6 month" rule - 22 Bedford UA, Great Barford - Conservative died 6th December Bracknell Forest UA, Winkfield & Cranborne - Conservative died 18th November Canterbury BC, Heron - Liberal Democrat died 8th January Charnwood BC, Thurmaston - Labour died around 10th November Chelmsford BC, The Lawns - Conservative died December Darlington UA, Park East - Labour died around 1st January Dartford BC, Brent - Conservative resigned around 15th December Eastleigh BC, Hedge End Wildern - Liberal Democrat resigned 2nd December East Staffordshire DC, Yoxall - Conservative died around 22nd December Maidstone BC, Leeds - Conservative died 27th January Milton Keynes UA, Monkston - Liberal Democrat resigned 17th November Pendle BC, Clover Hill - Labour resigned around 3rd December Rotherham MB, Silverwood - Labour resigned around 26th November Rushcliffe DC, Thoroton - Conservative died 16th November Sevenoaks DC, Cowden & Hever - Conservative sitting as UKIP resigned towards end of December Shepway DC, Hythe East - Conservative died 7th December Stroud DC, Nailsworth - Conservative died close to rule becoming applicable Torbay UA, Blatchcombe - Conservative died around 4th December Waverley BC, Cranleigh East - Conservative died 29th November Wealden DC, Buxsted & Maresfield - Conservative resigned 26th November Wychavon DC, Badsey - Conservative died 15th November Wychavon DC, Elmley Castle & Somerville - Conservative resigned around 16th December
