What do the Bulgarian parties stand for? Is there anyone left to vote in Bulgaria? I thought they would have all moved to Eastleigh by now, or were UKIP talking bollox?

No UKIP weren't talking bollox at all. The leaflet you're referring to said "Next year, the EU will allow 29 million Bulgarians and Romanians to come to the UK." That was an entirely accurate statement. Under EU law all Romanians and Bulgarians are permitted to come to live in the UK. A sensible immigration policy is one that asks of each individual would be immigrant 'Would their presence in the UK be of benefit to the existing citizens?'. Under EU law however all 29 million individual Bulgarian and Romanian citizens are permitted enter simply by right of their citizenship without having to give any further justification. Any Tom, Dick or Harry from those countries is permitted to turn up even if their presence brings no benefit to UK citiizens.

Bulgarian Socialist Party were the Bulgarian Communist Party prior to 1989.They make vaguely Left wing noises.Main support is among older people and in the rural areas.GERB (or in English 'Citizens for A European Bulgaria') is the vehicle of the former PM Boyko Borisov, who was the bodyguard to the ex dictator Todor Zhivkov, and then developed an interest in 'Insurance' after the fall of communism.Supposedly Centre Right it is, like the BSP, a vehicle for business Oligarchs.MRF (Movement for Rights and Freedoms) is the supposed 'Liberal' Party, but in fact is supported by Turks and gypsies in the main.Because of the Bulgarian electoral system it is pretty indispensable to form a government, though not at the minute. It has the reputation of being the most corrupt, and has a big grip on the South of the country and particularly the tobacco trade. Bulgaria Without Censorship is the vehicle of a young former TV presenter. It is anti-corruption and is allied with the VMRO (Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organisation) a nationalist party with old roots, hence the mention of Macedonia. AVB (Alternative for Bulgaria) is a split from the BSP, led by the former President Georgi Parvanov. It is supposedly moderate Left ATAKA is a barking mad fascist party led by Volen Siderov. They currently have a dozen MP's, but they are unlikely to get the 5% threshold for election due to a propensity to get pissed on airplanes, beating up airport security and doing ditto in Brussels restaurants.

What do you want them to stand for? A restoration of the monarchy. Bulgaria of course is a very rare case of a country where a former monarch was elected Prime Minister. Tsar Simeon II (b. 1937) was Monarch of Bulgaria 1943-6 when he was overthrown by the Communists. Later in life the same person was Prime Minister Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha (2001-5) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simeon_Saxe-Coburg-Gotha

2009 Results Romania (changes from Nov 2007 when Romania first held elections): Overall seats reduced from 35 to 33. PSD-PC 31.1% +5.1% * 11 seats +1 PES PDL 29.7% -6.9% * 10 seats - 6 EPP PNL 14.5% +1.1% 5 seats -1 ALDE UDMR 8.9% +3.4% 3 seats +1 EPP PRM 8.7% +4.5% 3 seats +3 Non-inscrits Elena Basescu (Ind) 4.2% +4.2% ** 1 seat +1 ** EPP
* Based on combined vote of constituent parts ** A different independant had got 3.4% and 1 seat in 2007 PSD-PC - Alliance of Social Democratic Party and Conservative Party (whose placing in the PES would seem rather odd) - Centre Left-Centre Right alliance PDL - Democratic Liberal Party - centre right liberal conservatives PNL - National Liberal Party - centre right liberals UDMR - Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania - liberal conservatives with an ethnic flavour PRM - Greater Romania Party -nationalist The independant is the daughter of the current president who had sought to stand for the Democratic Liberals but was turned down. She re-joined after election results were announced.
The Conservatives left their alliance with PSD in 2010. In 2011 they formed a Centre-Right alliance with PNL, although this alliance then formed the Social Liberal Union with PSD. All parties will be standing seperately this year though.
Romania loses a further seat to 32 this year.

Greece - 2009 results. Greece is one of a group of countries (Belgium, Hungary, Portugal and Czech Republic) who are reduced from 24 to 22 seats in 2009 and will all lose a further one this year PASOK | 36.6% | +2.6% | 8 seats | nc | PES | ND | 32.3% | -10.7% | 8 seats | -3 | EPP | KKE | 8.4% | -1.3% | 2 seats | -1 | EUL-NGL | LAOS | 7.1% | +3.0% | 2 seats | +1 | EFD | SYRIZA | 4.7% | +0.5% | 1 seat | nc | EUL-NGL | OP | 3.5% | +2.9% | 1 seat | +1 | EGP |
The polls are showing a huge swing from PASOK to SYRIZA, ND down a bit, the communists practically unchanged and LAOS and the Greens (OP) dropping off the radar whilst Golden Dawn and Independant Greeks should gain seats with DIMAR being touch and go...

Malta an even spilt between the National and Labour parties again? You say again, but the last two elections have been a 3:2 split in favour of Labour, with the Lisbon treaty making it a 4:2 split.
