I am truly sorry at this news; Paul was a decent man who came into politics for the same reasons he had been involved with Church Action against Poverty - out of a sense that he could make a real difference to the lives of those most in need. I may not have always seen eye-to-eye with him, but he was never less than kind, thoughtful and attentive to the needs of others. I pray that he may rest in peace and that his wife, Wyn, and their children might feel some succour at this time from the love of those around them. Could I ask that we might leave the political guesswork for the next few days?

I actually remember him visiting us when he was involved with CAP in Manchester and I worked at a housing charity with a Catholic connection. We had a blazing argument about the EU! I think he proved to be a very good Minister and such a sudden death is alwsys a real shock.

I heard of the terrible news while in a car between leafleting drops in Burnley. Both me and the fella driving felt a chill in the stomach. Horrible news, and my deepest sympathies to Paul Goggin's family and friends. Of course I respect the request to hold off the party political consequences until later.

The funeral service for Paul Goggins will take place next Thursday at Salford Cathedral.

I gained quite a lot of respect for Paul over the last few years and He did come across as a really decent guy. It's a shame this has happened.

Thanks! It's good to be back. I use to be on here every day in my old job as a researcher, but my new job didn't really allow me the time to get on here much!

I'm far too young to be contesting this election given the media attention and my age will always be a negative to the media.

It's likely i'll still play a part in the campaign though, as I'm still the only person in the party with experience in the constituency, living there since birth for 22 years and being the only UKIP Councillor (parish) in Wythenshawe and even Greater Manchester, not forgetting I've ran the local election campaigns and stood 7 times since 2010.

You shouldn't be so negative about your chances. You clearly have a lot of experience and it would be a chance for UKIP to show they aren't just a party of crotchety reactionary old fogies.

I don't think I'm being negative, just politically aware. Considering the impact this election could have, it's unlikely we will be taking any extra risks when it comes to the election.

Joe does raise a good point though, in that you are quite different from the average perception of a UKIP candidate. That seemed to be more benefit than hindrance to Diane James in Eastleigh, for example. And as you've already pointed out, you're a local candidate with substantial local electoral history. UKIP could parachute in a big hitter, I suppose Paul Nuttall would be the most sensible, but they're going to face accusations of carpetbaggery.

It is a good point and I know that if the election didn't have such a high media attention and high UKIP expectation, I'd be the candidate. But it's total different to Manchester Central.

I'm sure I once saw a statement of candidates for Wythenshawe that listed one candidate's address as Manchester Airport.
