Here is some background to the by-election in the Frome College ward of Frome Town Council in the District of Mendip (Somerset), held on WEDNESDAY, 18 December.
Frome Town Council comprises 17 members elected from six wards – Frome Berkley Down (3), Frome College (3), Frome Keyford (3), Frome Market (3), Frome Oakfield (2) and Frome Park (3).
The town wards are coterminous with the district wards of the same name.
The council strengths were: Elections on 3 May 2007: Lib Dem 9, Con 5, Lab 1, Independent 1, Vacant 1 Frome Berkley Down, Frome Keyford and Frome Oakfield wards were uncontested, with one vacancy remaining in Frome Oakfield ward, to be filled by co-option.
Elections on 5 May 2011: Independents for Frome 10, Lib Dem 4, Con 3
Current make-up (after the Frome College by-election): Independents for Frome 10, Lib Dem 5, Con 2
The town mayor and vice-chairman are Independents for Frome. The current town mayor is the youngest ever town mayor of Frome.
The result of the election in Frome College on 3 May 2007 (3 seats) was: Lib Dem 661/580, Con 563/489 Elected: Lib Dem 2, Con 1
The result of the election in Frome College on 5 May 2011 (3 seats) was: Independents for Frome 722/637/565, Con 669/648/549, Independent 448 Elected: Independents for Frome 1, Con 2
The present by-election in Frome College was caused by the resignation of James Godman (Con), who stated that life had become just too busy for him to continue as a councilor.
Adam Boyden (Lib Dem), who is already a district councilor for Frome College, gained the seat. The voting figures were Lib Dem 345, Con 212, Independents for Frome 132, Lab 94.
The result in the Frome College ward of Mendip District Council Council on 3 May 2007 (2 seats) was: Lib Dem 599/546, Con 528/462 Elected: Lib Dem 2

Here is some background to the by-election in the Sunnydale ward of Shildon Town Council in the County of Durham.
Shildon Town Council comprises 17 members elected from three wards – Byerley (5), Sunnydale (6) and Thickley (6).
The whole of Shildon town is combined with the parishes of Dene Valley and Eldon and part of the unparished area of Bishop Auckland to form the county electoral division of Shildon and Dene Valley.
The former Sedgefield District Council conducted the town council election on 3 May 2007.
The town wards were coterminous with the Sedgefield district wards of the same name.
The Byerley and Sunnydale town wards combined to form the Shildon West electoral division for the first election of the unitary county council on 1 May 2008.
The council strengths were: Elections on 3 May 2007: Independent 11, Lab 4, Lib Dem 2
Elections on 2 May 2013: Lab 9, Independent 6, Lib Dem 2
Current make-up (after the Sunnydale by-election) remains: Lab 9, Independent 6, Lib Dem 2
The current town mayor, deputy mayor, leader and deputy leader are all Labour. This by-election is caused by the death of the deputy mayor

Here is some background to the by-election in the Winsford Wharton ward of Winsford Town Council in the unitary district of Cheshire West and Chester.
Winsford Town Council comprises 15 members elected from six wards – Winsford Dene (2), Winsford Gravel (2), Winsford Over (3), Winsford Swanlow (3), Winsford Verdin (3) and Winsford Wharton (2).
Winsford Gravel and Winsford Wharton town wards are combined with the parishes of Stanthorne and Wimboldsley to form the Winsford Wharton district ward.
The former Vale Royal Borough Council had conducted the town council election on 3 May 2007, with slightly different ward boundaries in force. The town wards were coterminous with the Vale Royal borough wards of the same name.
The Winsford Gravel, Winsford Verdin and Winsford Wharton wards were combined to form the Winsford North and East ward of Cheshire West and Cheshire, for the inaugural elections on 1 May 2008.
The council strengths were: Elections on 3 May 2007:
Elections on 5 May 2011: Lab 12, Con 2, Lib Dem 1
Current make-up (after the Wharton by-election): Lab 11, Lib Dem 3, Con 1
The current town mayor and deputy mayor are Labour. The deputy mayor caused the latest by-election through his resignation and the town council has elected a new Lab deputy town mayor.

The result of the election in Winsford Wharton on 5 May 2011 (2 seats) was: Lab 504/423, Lib Dem 247/197, Con 238/234 Elected: Lab 2
The result of the by-election in Winsford Wharton on 9 May 2013 was Lab 286, Lib Dem 228, Con 100.
On 31 January 2013, Charlie Parkinson (Lib Dem) gained a seat in Winsford Over ward, following the retirement of Jamie Garratt (Con) for personal reasons.
On 9 May 2013, David Edwards (Lab) held a seat in Winsford Wharton ward, following the death of John White (Lab).
On 14 November 2013, Anthony Hooton (Lab) held a seat in Winsford Verdin ward, following the resignation of Michael Burns (Lab), for personal reasons.
The by-election on 19 December 2013 in Winsford Wharton ward was caused by the resignation of Paul Jones (Lab), who was the deputy mayor.
Bev Theron (Lib Dem) gained the seat. The voting figures were Lib Dem 163, Lab 159, Con 61.
