Or can you eliminate several people at the tail end together, in this instance?

You can't, really. The same if there was a hypothetical election in which only 1 voter turned out, or if a small number turned out but all plumped for the same candidate.

Winstanley for Winstanley? There was a Liberal Party member called Catherine Twelvetrees - I always thought she should stand for Sevenoaks. That would have been the best campaign slogan since "Hooley for Heeley".

That Bradford. I need to turn in , it's getting too late to absorb important details. So it's a one person pirate ship. No, they do have little pockets of candidates here and there. In size terms, they are probably comparable to the Liberal Party. They had candidates in two regions for the Scottish Parliament elections in 2011. ah, I meant in Manchester. I'd notice them standing elsewhere before.

No to the bedoomcTax gets double the Tory vote. Says a lot about Glasgow Says more about Govan than Glasgow. There's big chunks of middle class Glasgow where the Tories could and should do quite well. Govan is not one of those places. Also, the Lib Dem candidate is a good friend and I know he's very amused that he managed a 22% increase in our share of the vote..... Although considering where we started and ended, that wasn't super hard.

Haverhill North Town Council Result : (St Edmundsbury Suffolk)
UKIP 43.4% CON 29.5% LAB 24.6% IND 2.3%
I know its only a town council, but that is an immensely satisfying result given the circumstances which lead to it. A big dose of STFU dispensed to the po-faced pricks in the Haverhill Labour party

You also need to remember that the No Bedroom Tax guy is a former Labour councillor for the ward who stood as an independant and got a very similar vote share last May.

Odd isn't it that we have article after article pontificated why the Tories and by association the Liberal Democrats are struggling in the north and then you have comments like "says a lot about Glasgow". Until the parties understand the causes of poverty and don't go for the simple option keep writing them.

Tweeddale West is where I grew up.. probably a Lib Dem win. Candidate was an independent in 2007 and seems more transfer friendly than LD brand.

Generally a very nice set of results for us - shame about N Yorks, but maybe the Labour candidate's injudicious tweeting didn't help him there

Thats pretty emphatic - presumably some kind of personal vote for the candidate at play here?

One interesting thing I noticed when looking at the Selby election was that David McSherry, the Independent candidate had stood in Hemingborough ward (part of this county division) in 2011 and was not far off getting elected. The Conservative who topped the poll was a Kay McSherry. They don't share the same address but it isn't all that common a name so I speculated that they may be related - perhaps ex husband and wife (I seem to recall recently a discussion on another thread about spouses standing against each other). He wasn;t previously a councillor so he did quite well to come close to being elected then. Anyone know anything more about the situation there?

The Parbold result is remarkably good for Labour. This is seriously posh Lancashire, and the Tories usually walk it.

A quick thought on Weaste & Seedley. We ran a low-key campaign compared to the previous by-election in June, so I'm pleased that our vote share has gone up again. UKIP must be extremely disappointed following the June result, and it says a lot that the Liberal Democrats in Salford now can't even find a candidate for a ward in which they held all three Councillors from 2004 until 2010.
