There's another issue with the disappearance of Lib Dem candidates this week. Only 3 out of 8 byelections being fought. There had been a problem a couple of months back, but thought it had been overcome, even in weakish areas. Mind you, this week one of the three standing is in Govan, never noteworthy for its high Liberal or Lib Dem vote share!

Well, to be fair, 3 of the 5 contests you're missing have no recent history of a LD candidate at all, so no surprises. Also didn't contest Barnsley the last time the seat was contested and the result in the previous by-election in Salford was hardly encouraging...

The LibDem score in the June byelection was all the more striking given that they held all three seats in the ward prior to 2010.

Here is some background to the by-election in the Lakeside ward of Bradley Stoke Town Council in South Gloucestershire unitary.
Bradley Stoke Town Council comprises 15 members elected from seven wards – Baileys Court (2), Lakeside (2), Manor Farm (1), Meadowbank (2), Primrose Bridge (4), Stoke Brook (1) and Woodlands (3).
Baileys Court, Lakeside and Meadowbank town wards are combined to form the Bradley Stoke South district ward.
Manor Farm and Primrose Bridge town wards are combined with Stoke Lodge ward of Patchway parish to form the Bradley Stoke Central and Stoke Lodge district ward. Woodlands town ward forms the Bradley Stoke North district ward. Stoke Brook town ward is combined with the Central and North wards of Stoke Gifford parish in the Stoke Gifford ward.
The council strengths were: Elections on 3 May 2007: *Con 13, Lib Dem 2 Elections on 5 May 2011: Con 15 Current make-up: Con 11 UKIP 3, Vacant 1

On 6 September 2012, Paul Hardwick (Con) held a seat in Meadowbank ward, following the resignation of Barry Mitchell (Con) for personal and professional reasons.
On 2 May 2013, Andrew Ward (Con) held a seat in Primrose Bridge ward, following the resignation of Keir Gravil (Con), because his work was taking him to Australia.

The present by-election in Lakeside ward is caused by the resignation of Charlotte Walker (Independent), as she is studying away from the town and no longer lives in the area.
The three candidates are Lib Dem, UKIP and Con.
The result in the Bradley Stoke South ward of South Gloucestershire Council on 3 May 2007 (2 seats) was Con 989/965, Lib Dem 633/589, Lab 262/247, UKIP 91/56 Elected: Con 2

The Lib Dem candidate in Govan in 2012 came 12th. Would expect a similar result tonight, to be honest.

West Lancashire - Parbold Con 554 Lab 461 UKIP 103 So another Labour Gillard is defeated - but that looks like a reasonable result given previous contests?

I think South Selby is counting tomorrow.
Are the Scottish seats counting overnight? Or can we go to bed?
