I would argue against that, it's often possible for tellers and campaigners on the ground to have a feel of the mood of the electorate, and how much of their own support has turned out to vote. I'm not saying they can accurately predict results to the percentage point, but you can usually tell if one side has swept to victory, or if it's going to be a long night of recounts.

I think campaigners can (tellers not so much), but they rarely have access to the data to tell if what they're seeing is representative. What's more, if you know what's going on you're more likely to still be involved. Reliable data doesn't come back until everybody's had time to pack up and have a pint.

Usually at 10 PM it's always too close to call according to journalists.

Is it correct that the SNP's majority in the Scottish Parliament will be down to one seat if they lose Dunfermline tonight? The 2 Green MSPs will support the SNP in a vote of confidence as will the 2 or 3 who are independents who left the SNP over NATO will back the SNP in any confidence vote. It'l take a lot of deaths/defections to shift them pre 2016.

It'l take a lot of deaths/defections to shift them pre 2016. There's certainly no formal agreement for the Green MSPs to back the SNP in a vote of confidence this time round, though the SNP could well seek some sort of deal with us should such a situation arise. I can't see us joining an Everyone-but-the-SNP coalition, but it's possible that we'd abstain. Jean Urquhart however said last week at a CND fringe meeting at the Scottish Green Party autumn conference that she essentially continues to support the SNP government as she was elected on an SNP manifesto.

Says the former Green Member :-) I'd complain, but I literally did used to go to a falafel shop after Green Party branch meetings, because there was a really nice one just around the corner from where the branch meetings in Edinburgh were held...

You mean you didn't go to the Castle Arms? I think I went once or twice, but I didn't really drink at that time.
