Technically , Bob Wootton is No Description rather than an Independent .

Just out of interest, what is the difference between someone being described as Independent and No Description? I assume it is only that they have gone to the trouble of filling in the nomination form with the word 'Independent' on it under the party description rather than leaving it blank. For voters, I would imagine that Independent suggests that the person is not a member of a political party while having no decsription doesn't preclude this, but as we know, there are many Independent candidates and councillors who are members of political parties. Other than that, what difference is there? If an Independent group is formed (or indeed several as we see in our favourite authorities , there is no compulsion on any person joining or not joining, whether they are described as Independent or have no description.

When I aggregate votes by constituency, borough or whatever I always put the No Descriptions in the Independent column

Am Independent has filled in his nomination form and put Independent in the Party Description box . A No Description candidate has not . One possibility which has happened before with other parties is that the candidate wants to describe himself has Party A but has forgotten to bring with them the necessary form to allow himself to do so . He then ends up described as No Description . I have no idea what the actual position is in this case .

Someday someone is going to have to go to the trouble of doing a survey to try to establish whether candidates who leave the description box blank do better or worse than those who put in 'Independent'.

Particularly on some of the island councils, you'll find that the No Descriptions are party members, or identify strongly with a party but party candidates are not the done thing there. Independents are more often genuinely independent of anyone else's views.

Torridge DC often elects independents (many different varieties). A likely scenario is that he didn't want to go so far as to declare himself Independent (capital I, ie Independent Party) but was prepared for a half way house appealing to voters who may not be aware he is a Lib Dem, while not opposing any official Lib Dems. Experience shows at present that people are unlikely to be elected under the Lib Dem banner in any but the strongest and most active places. Shebbear and Langtree certainly would not qualify under that heading.

I'm going to enjoy writing the Manor House preview; my grandparents (both now dead) used to live in the ward and my dad grew up there. The Manor is Owton Manor.

Independents are more often genuinely independent of anyone else's views. Don't councillors have to declare membership of a political party under their "Declaration of Interests"? In which case they could only keep their membership secret for their first election to office.

You don't have to be a betting man to say it - only to bet on it. I take it you think UKIP will come close then?

Could be a fairly close 3-way finish if the Labour vote holds up?

Could be a fairly close 3-way finish if the Labour vote holds up? yep thats my feeling from the information I can see flying across from Labour people. We have a good area where the vote is doing well and if that holds up (and there is a local issue as well regarding a youth facility) then if it is not a close three way I would be shocked.
