MERTON BOROUGH - Colliers Wood (Labour died)
2002 - Lab 1326/1306/1254, Green 940/813/752, Con 179/158/145 2006 - Lab 1713/1625/1577, Green 1222/1152/1068, Con 398/374/353, LD 262 2010 - Lab 2608/2367/2261, Con 1001/960/848, LD 888/804/608, Green 622
Caroline COOPER-MARBIAH (Labour Party Candidate) Shafqa JANJUA (UKIP) Phil LING (Liberal Democrat) Peter LORD (Conservative Party Candidate)
No Green Party candidate this time as, according to their Twitter account, it's apparently not their target anymore and they've made "an executive decision not to field a candidate at Colliers Wood and concentrate on next year elections".

Given the drop from 3 to candidates to 1 in 2010, I presume they've simply lost their activists in the area...

Wouldn't be my way of doing things. No, we've heard nothing of any Green Party campaigning in the borough since 2006. IIRC they had 9/60 candidates in 2010. Recently they did a couple of street stalls to collect signatures calling for the defecting Con-to-UKIP councillors to resign.

Did you hear whether the people of Merton were enthused by the prospect of paying for the by-elections the Green Party were seeking? I agree it was an odd one for the Green Party, especially given their own reluctance to fight local by-elections - however, I doubt most people would have given it a second thought. Personally, in pure electoral terms, I think it would have been better for UKIP to fight the by-elections. They'd have had a really good chance of winning, and the momentum would have carried them through into 2014. I doubt that in 2014 Suzanne Evans or Rod Scott (if re-standing) would hold on in Hillside or Raynes Park. I think Richard Hilton has good chance in Lower Morden.

The Green petition apparently gathered all of 14 signatures calling for by-elections. Now, Stephen Hammond MP has called for further by-elections, even suggesting that they hold them the same day as Colliers Wood (he had already missed the legal deadline when he made the call). The Colliers Wood explanation from the Greens really doesn't add up, but they do seem to make some bizarre decisions and have a strange set of priorities.
It is interesting to see your electoral analysis of UKIPs chances in Merton of holding their seats in Merton. Rod Scott was meant to be standing down, but maybe he has now changed his mind. Really can't see Suzanne Evans standing in Hillside either, think she may be standing in St Helier.

Really can't see Suzanne Evans standing in Hillside either, think she may be standing in St Helier. I think Merton's Green Party is just Dominik, which might explain the unusual electoral decisions - and I thought exactly the same about Hammond's opportunism (and said the same to local journalists when I saw the Hammond press release). I'd wondered if the defection would mean Rod changed his mind about standing. Demographically, St Helier would seem to be a good ward for UKIP to properly contest, so that would make a certain amount of sense for Suzanne. I also think Cannon Hill and Ravensbury could be good targets.

Partial Oulton result Lab 449 Con 329 UKIP 269
LD candidate predicting a Con increased majority in Swindon. Lab second, UKIP close behind them. Tories on twitter were making fun of Labour canvassing streets outside the ward earlier today.
