Am I the only one who finds this whole notion depressing? Don’t get me wrong I appreciate the information and insights provided above by other forum members but I wonder what Thomas Paine would make of the fact that in 2018 this “remnant of aristocratic tyranny” still exists?

Depressing ,but interesting in a weird way at the same time, and no, I don't suppose Tom Paine would be impresssed at all

Without wishing to further distress Mr Paine, there will be a further by-election in September /October following the retirement of Lord Northbourne, a Crossbencher.

Just be a generational thing but the thought of families that have long served this nation still having a place as opposed to money grubbers or failed politicians. I'd rather a duke of Westminster then a Ted heath or Tony Blair. I don’t know how many generations you are above mine, I thought you were about my age😂. On topic though, I’d always choose a democratically elected person over an unelected one regardless of how shit they were. It’s one of the primary reasons I voted Leave for example.

I'm curious how you could possibly claim that the families of hereditary peers 'have long served this nation' in a way that everybody else's families haven't. This applies double to the Grosvenors.

I guess the argument would be generations have served in the lords. Admittedly I think it’s a bollocks argument.

The next House of Lords by-election is for the seat vacated by Earl Baldwin of Bewdley, who was elected by the Crossbench peers. The result is due to be announced on 4 July. There are 19 candidates and an electorate of 31 peers. The candidates and their statements are here: www.parliament.uk/documents/lords-information-office/2018/Arrangements-by-election-15-06-18.pdf Former members standing to rejoin the House include the Earl of Albemarle (member 1986-99), the Earl of Effingham (member 1996-99), Lord Hankey (member 1996-99), Viscount Hood (member for one month before the 1999 reforms) and Lord Meston (member 1984-99). Candidates of particular note include the Lord Bridges (the Queen's solicitor), the Earl of Carnarvon (owner of Highclere Castle, aka Downton Abbey) and the Earl of Snowdon (the Queen's nephew, and the only candidate not to submit a written statement). The youngest candidate is the 24-year-old Lord Glenconner. Four other candidates are relatively young: Lord Mostyn and Lord Ravensdale are in their 30s and the Duke of Hamilton & Brandon and the Earl of Devon are in their early 40s. There is another by-election in process, with the result due on 18 July, for a seat on the Conservative benches following the retirement of Lord Glentoran. The candidates list will be announced on 29 June. The 42-year-old Earl of Devon has won the Crossbench by-election, winning on the 6th stage with 12 votes. He's a barrister and owns Powderham Castle, Devon. Runner-up was Lord Ravensdale with 5 votes. The Earl of Snowdon withdrew. The Conservative by-election, caused by the retirement of Lord Glentoran, has attracted 11 candidates. The electorate is 47 peers and the result will be announced on 18 July. Four former members are hoping to regain their seats: Lord Biddulph (member 1988-99), Earl De La Warr (member 1988-99), Lord Rowallan (1993-99) and most notably the Earl of Stockton (member 1986-99; MEP 1999-2004). Lord Bethell, who formerly worked in PR and came a good second in a 2017 by-election, is standing again. Full list of candidates and their statements here: www.parliament.uk/documents/lords-information-office/2018/Arrangements-by-election-29-06-18.pdf

What democratic right did he have to be a signatory? Droit de seigneur? Surely not....

Gutted to discover that it’s Baron Biddulph of Ledbury in the County of Herefordshire and not Staffordshire, and the former Biddulph Grange hospital where I spent months of my childhood recuperating from operations was not the Family Seat.

One think I always like about these announcements from the HoL is the use of initials not for names but for ranks- so E for earl,M for marquess,V for viscount etc.Seems very levelling somehow.
