Sure, but the current one is the 7th and the 6th (his brother) was a Labour councillor. Well, clearly the brothers were not in accord politically, but the 7th earl is clearly the son of the father in that respect. Conrad Russell was a Labour parliamentary candidate before joining the Liberals (and of course his father Bertrand was a Labour peer)

No self respecting Earl should live in Lewisham. The Honourable Colin Moynihan, Lewisham East, 1983-1992, subsequently succeeded to family Baronetcy in 1997, I think. Lives near Tunbridge Wells. Itself a bit of a dump. Most overrated town going.

One of the last contested successions I think; Sir Nicholas Lyell, as Attorney General, had to argue Colin’s case before the House of Lords Privileges Committee who ruled: “that neither of the two sons purporting to be the sons of the Third Baron can, in fact, be an heir to the peerage. In the case of the elder, Andrew, the committee was shown overwhelming genetic evidence that he cannot be the son of the late Lord Moynihan; and so far as the younger, Daniel, is concerned, the evidence clearly shows that he is the child of a bigamous marriage and is therefore illegitimate. In those circumstances, it is clear beyond doubt that the petitioner, Colin Moynihan, must be the rightful heir and that his Petitions must succeed.”

Wierd list, considering the Belhaven and Stenton were Conservative peers and the previous Lord Russell, Labour. Although the 13th Lord Belhaven & Stenton (the present Lord's father) did for a time switch to the SNP before returning. He was never a supporter of Scottish independence. IIRC the 2nd Lord was a strong opponent of the Act of Union on the grand principle of... not being bribed to support it despite previously being in favour.

He is the 4th Baron Moynihan of Leeds in the county of York. And has an Olympic silver medal from coxing the men's eight at the 1980 Moscow games. And was indeed the Miniature for Sport for a while.

Which it's safe to say no self-respecting Earl should have taken any part in, so it all adds up.

The Daily Telegraph obituary in 1991 of the 3rd Lord Moynihan was a classic. It started: “The Third Lord Moynihan, who has died in Manila, aged 55, provided through his character and career ample ammunition for critics of the hereditary principle. His chief occupations were bongo drummer, confidence trickster, brothel-keeper, drug-smuggler and police informer.”

PC Geoff Capes was favourite for gold in the shot putt and had to leave the Police to compete. As such he was forced to turn pro after the Olympics

To be fair even comments about the House of Lords are unwelcome in this thread. We must strictly limit ourselves to the discussion of by-elections of Hereditary Peers.

It’s connected to our little detour down the route of two future Tory MPs and Peers attending the Olympics that their beloved leader wanted them to boycott. Do keep up, you should be well used to the diverse tangents discussions can take on here. Who knows, had PC Capes lived up to his favourite status and come home with a Gold medal (or any medal), along with his “for services to budgies”, he might have earned himself a place on the red benches.

Mr Subutteo as Dennis Skinner once dubbed him. This is a new sentence for me. It was at a Party Conference, presumably when Moynihan was Sports Minister, and I’m guessing, as you don’t usually associate Dennis with Conference speeches on sport, despite a lifetime of cycling and running, he was winding up a debate on behalf of the NEC. Just off the top of my head, I’m pretty sure Moynihan was Sports Minister charged with introducing Thatcher’s football ID card scheme, so the debate may have been on that.
