Not necessarily. If the ballots were counted electronically it calculates the final result instantaneously. I saw that system being used when I was Green agent for the East Kilbride West by-election.

The Salford vote suggests that the LD's really are exiting from serious contention in the northern cities. The other votes were about what I expected.

That's a good result for Labour in Fife to hold the seat. On that basis they shouldn't have any problems in Edinburgh.
