Oh, are we back on the topic of names? I used to know a guy called Andy Christ. Was he by chance a sixer from Satan Close, Devil Drive, Sodom? Eh, Frankfurt Sodom, I see no difference. He stopped going to the football and I never met him outside that context, but I hear he got married to a Turkish-German girl, moved to the suburbs and has kids now.

Currently spending a few days in Northumberland and actually drove through Cramlington this afternoon. Absolutely zero sign of by-election activity, I have to report

Are there signs of by-elections anywhere much these days? There was barely any sign of a General Election happening in most constituencies I happened to be in during this year's campaign.

I can’t remember the last time that a council by-election saw more than one or two window bills

I can’t remember the last time that a council by-election saw more than one or two window bills I am pleased to report that there is a healthy showing in Abbots Langley. Stellar roads are Trowley Rise (for Labour stakeboards) and Abbots Road (described to me as "Snob Row" by a long-time resident!) with Lib Dem boards. I'm told there are Conservative ones up as well, but nothing reported for the Greens.

Interesting result. Conservative vote drops from 59.1% to 43.5%, but Labour only increases from 30.1% to 31.5%, while Reform obtains 15%. Independent obtained 8.9% in 2021, which split 5.7% Ind, 2% LD, 1.9% Green and .5% in 2024. Reform UK is the biggest gainer.

I’d say it is. Percentages and changes CON: 43.5% (-15.6) LAB: 31.5% (+1.4) RFM: 15.0% (New) IND: 5.7% (New) LDM: 2.0% (New) GRN: 1.9% (New) IND: 0.5% (New) No other IND (-10.8) as previous.

Let’s confine ourselves to discussion of next week’s council by-elections. I notice the one in Northumberland has two different Independent candidates. There is potential for a social experiment in analysing the great rivalry between them in competing for votes using different leafleting methods. It would be nice if Independent candidates were permitted to elaborate slightly and describe themselves as Independent of the Right/Independent of the Left etc. It would be more meaningful for psephologists and for voters.
