STIRLING Dunblane and Bridge of Allan Stuart McLuckie (Scottish Conservative and Unionist) 1,143 David Wilson (Scottish Labour Party) 952 John Watson (Scottish National Party (SNP)) 770 Andrew Adam (Scottish Greens) 659 Dick Moerman (Scottish Liberal Democrats) 345 Alastair George Majury (Independent) 225 E. 12,057; quota 2,048 David Wilson elected at stage 6 Conservatives with by far the more popular candidate here. Labour however manage to pick up the dregs and crawl over the line. Desperate stuff. But, such is STV. You have a bizarrely eclectic and eccentric idea of what “popular” means, given the fact that the Labour candidate got more votes than the Conservative candidate.

No, it’s not irrelevant. If a candidate has reached the quota in the first round, they stop, and don’t have to do any transfers. If a candidate has reached the quota in round 2, they stop and don’t do a third round. Etc The "quota" is always either equal to, or greater than, an overall majority. It's therefore irrelevant. Nobody would bother with a quota in a manual count. You still need to know what 50% +1 of the total vote is. Whether you call it a quota or a majority doesn't make any difference.

Not in the real votes and only as a result of the halfwitted voting system.

So Labour has held the two seats which were forecast to be extremely difficult for it to hold. Tomorrow we have the count iin the seat which Labour was expected to hold. I am scandalised, shocked and quite frankly appalled… aren’t we all anticipating a surprise win for an independent candidate in Islington?? Of core snot! If we were anticipating or expecting it, it wouldn’t be a surprise would it? If we want to have a surprise result, I suggest a Conservative gain.

Well its AV in a by election not STV. Secondly AV or STV means people can express their preferences. IN FFTP the Labour candidate as the leading non Tory candidate would almost certainly have secured victory by a comfortable margin due to tactical voting . It always amazes me that Scottish Conservatives can attack STV?AV as they would barely exist without it.

I’m confused. I’m watching the Sky News channel, but they haven’t yet mentioned the Hillrise by-election or gone over to Jon Craig on location at the count.

Pitiful turnout so low I'm tempted to suggest the whole thing should be canceled and the residents of that Ward should remain unrepresented. Evidently hardly anyone gives a **** On the bontrary. The evidence is that the other 89% of the electorate studiously read the leaflets, questioned the candidates, considered the issues carefully, nodded sagely to themselves, and decided to defer to the voters to decide who should be elected to represent them. That is the opposite if “hardly giving a ****”.

Off Topic but surely by now we can have votes by Internet/electronic means we seem to do everything else on the internet (shopping, banking, paying bills, registering to vote, reporting issues to the council). Register yr phone number with council. Receive code. Verify. Get vote at election time. Vote on yr phone. Oldies, Conservatives and such like and the anti-left obviously will be against Been there. Did that. Made bugger all difference really.

Or given the state of the handwriting the electors are still deciphering them.
