On election day, the candidate's job is to "show face" outside the polling stations. Though, of course, in most cases voters may recognise the candidate from photographs on the leaflets or from having been canvassed by them. But with a candidate who hasn't canvassed and whose hand-written leaflets probably don't include an artist's impression ... Here is a good artist's impression of the candidate and his team

Two declare tonight Caerphilly and Stirling. Islington will count Friday morning So, roughly translated, one rural ward & one double town ward, both covering a fair geographical area & presumably with multiple polling stations can organise a count this evening, while a compact urban ward with 2 or 3 polling stations (?) all within spitting distance of each other can’t be arsed to get its democratic act together ffs.

There's no reason why it should be done overnight. Let's save some money & avoid anti social hrs and do it the following day.

Surely this saves no money as the votes still need to be collated and brought together. If the clerks begin the count straight away there is a handover rather than the shift ending at midnight and the morning shift beginning at 8am - in practice little work will be done between 11:30pm and 8:30pm which will eat up any savings (not sure for an ad hoc job like this staff would be paid more for nightshift anyway).

I wondered how much Andrew's Preview would take all this into account, and all we got was:
Truly the "Mostly Harmless" of election previews.

that, too, would be a double-edged sword. Autism isn't great on the doorstep. It's better for me to leaflet. Why did I win Union elections? By messaging 1,000+ people a week. I do not canvass well in-person. I have more Rizzla than Ris.

Obviously everyone is different but there are plenty of autistic people here who are perfectly ok with canvassing, and you have mentioned several members of the public you've talked to while leafleting. The electorate generally like to see candidates or at least their representatives out and talking to them

3,500 leaflets delivered, 10 cigarillos smoked. Thanks everyone for your sagely wisdom.

The best argument for immediate counting is to avoid all false suspicion of tampering with the balots.

Haven't you got an election to fight today? On election day, the candidate's job is to "show face" outside the polling stations. Baulleux - you get more work done getting as many polling-day leaflets out as possible than hanging around outside a polling station.

Yes, the thing about overnight counting in a General Election is that we know by the morning who will be running the country or, in unusual circumstances, precisely what the constitutional mess that needs to be sorted out before we know that looks like itself.

This rural ward, where is it? Bargoed/Aberbargoed is a community of about 12,000 people and is fairly compact.

At least having the count in the morning gives you a chance to get some rest. Presumably it's a 10am kick off at Islington Town Hall (or wherever the count is happening, they won't need a large space). I've never been in a position of having to do anything serious at a count. When I was a paper candidate, I just stood with the serious players to hear the result and that was that. How those who have to endure recounts manage I don't know. When I was an Agent at a GE I just made sure the Counting Agents at the boxes I was interested in were doing their job but the others were decorative. I remember being called over to adjudicate on a few ballots but as we were 17,000 or so behind the Conservative and 6,000 or so in front of Labour the one thing we knew wouldn't be needed was a recount.

One cannot just turn up to the count - you would have to have given the returning officer or the electoral services of the council, the name and email address of any counting agent with you. I've never had to supply the email address. Usually I've had to forward the electronic copy of the access letters myself.

There are six polling stations across four polling places. www.islington.gov.uk/-/media/sharepoint-lists/public-records/elections/2024/notice-of-poll-for-hillrise-ward.pdf?la=en&hash=8CEA28B2A98C0F4F519C813F598DF4F3DA04212FIslington also bizarrely published the SOPN on HTML but then puts the information into the Notice Of Poll PDF. But at the risk of outrage on this forum there's nothing wrong with councils not spending scarce money just to get a declaration at night.
