Depending on how it's done it can either give you an indication of how things are going or be a total waste of time.

So, with the final weekend about to start, how many identified* definities and probables have you got from your canvassing? * Identified meaning electors for whom you have electoral number, name and address - the woman who smiled at you outside Spar does not count. How many campaigns ever have posted this information on a public forum?

Who wants to go the opening of postal votes? Should I do this or not? Oh yes. It’s always interesting especially if you’ve not done it before. Remember though that it’s secret (Section 66 of something, which they will ask you to sign) so if you get any clues about how people are voting, don’t tell us until afterwards. Representation of the People Act 1983 as amended in years after: www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1983/2/section/66

Oh yes. It’s always interesting especially if you’ve not done it before. Remember though that it’s secret (Section 66 of something, which they will ask you to sign) so if you get any clues about how people are voting, don’t tell us until afterwards. I see. Thanks for explaining it. Or, to put it another way: 1. You are there to observe the process of postal votes being opened and processed, to ensure that the staff are following the correct procedures. (a) they take the inner envelopes out of the outer envelopes (this is the boring bit) (b) they scan and check the signatures and dates of birth (this is the interesting bit) (c) they open the inner envelopes and take out the ballot papers (this is the important bit) 2. The ballot papers are thin enough that it is possible to ACCIDENTALLY look through them and notice how people have voted. (a) you might ACCIDENTALLY notice how people have voted (b) the staff know that you might have ACCIDENTALLY noticed how people have voted (c) you pretend that you haven’t noticed (d) the staff pretend not to have noticed that you might have accidentally noticed Different local authorities, and different Returning Officers and their staff, probably vary a lot in terms of how strict they are in allowing people to notice, or notice how much people are noticing. If you do accidentally notice a pattern of how people have voted, make sure that nobody notices if you write down numbers on a piece of paper (go outside the room in order to write numbers down). If you do accidentally notice how people have voted, don’t tell anyone or make predictions based on what you have seen, until after polls close next Thursday.

Don't you ever go to sleep? I’ve got an election to win. 75 leaflets delivered already this morning. I don’t canvass much because autism. The campaign comes over better written. I can’t canvass people for shit. Let’s see how it pans out. If elected, email, phone both fine. We all know our own limitations. One can still burn midnight oil. Burning the candle at both ends. I’ll show you my stamina, Jack. Listen in, listen close, we’re winning.
