I'd rather leave the situation regarding the personal possession of cannabis fuzzy: legalisation opens several cans of worms. I wouldn't rather leave it fuzzy, and many Black British people who've been nicked for possession would agree with me, IMHO, I don't even smoke weed, but I see then argument for decriminalisation. If it works for many other jurisdictions, why can't we legalise it / decriminalise it here? It's possible with Labour in.

I was at Cafe Forum in the Holloway Road a week or so for a very decent late breakfast. It's been a long time since I did elections but a week out and I wouldn't be doing random canvassing - I'd be going back on the "possibles" to try and firm them up as well as sending out any targeted leaflets either to particular roads or to particular identified voter groups prior to the final push over the weekend. Given it's an August by election, it's likely to be a) low turnout and b) a number of voters will be away so presumably a lot more postal votes. As for what to do on polling day, there's a temptation not to waste resources on staffing polling stations with a 20-25% turnout but you have to find out who has voted if you are going to get your vote out. Presumably a targeted "Good Morning" leaflet followed then by selective knock up through the day. If that's advice, thank you. We're focusing in the part of the ward nearest to my home in Whitehall Park, where we'e had decent responses and support. The forum will be pleased to know I'm not an autistic piece of shit all the time (I know that might be hard to fathom). My autism and nystagmus were a source of humour once lol. Not really intended to be advice - more experience from the 80s and 90s in London and Cornish residential Wards. Also based on having to cut your campaigning coat according to your activist cloth. Even half a dozen keen and willing volunteers can do a lot - if you had 50 you could do a lot more but from the sounds of it, you don't. You will know from your canvass returns where your likely voters are and where your strongest areas are and all you can do now is prioritise those and sweat out as much of the vote as you can. Deliver everywhere if you can but if you've not canvassed a street, I wouldn't do it this late. I can only wish you luck and I hope, win, lose or draw you a) enjoy the experience and b) get your post-election paperwork (with receipts) in order if you are your own Agent.

Are you suggesting Labour should legalise that revolting substance as a bribe to keep Islington voters onside? They should decriminalise weed as it’s the right thing to do. I think I would vote Labour if I lived in Hillrise, I am impressed by your logical fallacies/question begging.

I'd rather leave the situation regarding the personal possession of cannabis fuzzy: legalisation opens several cans of worms. It's actually LSD that has that effect on you. Or so I hear...

We know where to focus. We’re doing Pareto principle par excellence here. My best areas are that part of the ward abutting Hornsey Lane. Whitehall Park is most receptive.

I got an unconditional offer for LSE, so that’s close enough. The one stoner I met in Hillside Park just off St John’s Way says he’s voting for me. We shot the shit and talked smack for a bit and agreed about how brilliant Diane Abbott is.

In terms of sheer enthusiasm, alacrity and perspicacity, the independent campaigns are the strongest. I know this because in Whitehall Wines, my poster went up first, then Alison then Labour’s. I also know exactly where she has been working hardest from what I can discern - it’s the Holly Park Estate on Crouch Hill which she worked before I did. However, I believe I can get a bloc vote from Whitehall Park due to living in Hornsey Lane and having years of ties to N6. I’m the only one who put their address out there. I believe Labour’s woman lives in Barnsbury N1, like Nargund. I believe that is something I should exploit to the hilt so that voters know what the real choice is here.

It's often the case independent candidates, while lacking numbers of workers, make up for it in terms of enthusiasm and effort. Playing the "local" card often has an impact but not always and possibly less so in London than other parts of the country. Nonetheless, if you are the only "local" on the ballot it's not a bad thing to point out. IF elected, will you caucus with the other Independents or be completely non-affiliated?

Well he definitely won't "caucus" with anyone as this isn't America and that term has no meaning in a UK context. Presumably you meant to ask if he will form a group with other independents?

I find it quite amusing that we have certainly talked far more on this forum than the sum total of all conversations in Islington about the Hillrise by election. Let it be over!

There is an independent Councillor in Finsbury Park who left Labour over Gaza, IIRC. I don’t know enough about her to properly answer the question, I’m afraid.

So, with the final weekend about to start, how many identified* definities and probables have you got from your canvassing?
* Identified meaning electors for whom you have electoral number, name and address - the woman who smiled at you outside Spar does not count.

Who wants to go the opening of postal votes? Should I do this or not?

Who wants to go the opening of postal votes? Should I do this or not? Oh yes. It’s always interesting especially if you’ve not done it before. Remember though that it’s secret (Section 66 of something, which they will ask you to sign) so if you get any clues about how people are voting, don’t tell us until afterwards.

Thanks for explaining it.
