Come back, Middle Englander, all is forgiven.
The final count appears to be 71 by-elections on 2 May 2024, 48 single seat contests and 23 “double” elections (62 arising from resignation, 8 caused by the death of the sitting councillor and 1 caused by disqualification for non-attendance).
By comparison there were 348 by-elections in English seats on 6 May 2021 – 253 single seats and 95 “double” elections. Hardly any by-elections were held during 2020-21, because of covid and lockdowns. Back on 5 May 2016, there were 76 by-elections in English seats – 50 single seats and 26 “double elections”.
By category, the 48 single seats divide as 15 London Boroughs, 1 Metropolitan District (Birmingham), 2 Unitary Counties, 6 Shire Counties, 8 Unitary Authorities and 16 Shire Districts. The 23 “double” elections divide as 6 Metropolitan Districts, 2 Unitary Authorities and 15 Shire Districts.
Of the 23 “double” elections, 20 pairs of “double” seats are defended by the same party, but 3 are defended by different parties:
Hart (Fleet East) – regular Con, bye Lib Dem St. Albans (London Colney) – regular Con, bye Lib Dem Salford (Ordsall) – regular Lab, bye Lib Dem
The date below shows the year in which the retiring councillor was elected. R indicates the vacancy arose as a result of a resignation and D following a death.

Teignbridge – Ashburton and Buckfastleigh have followed the rather strange practice of publishing the Notice of Election Agents but not the Statement of Persons Nominated.
Based on this:
Susan Louise Clarke, who stood for the South Devon Alliance in this ward last year. Richard John Reynolds Eldmann, who stood for the Conservatives in Moretonhampstead Ward last year. Madeleine Hunt, who stood for the Heritage Party for Newton Abbot Town Council last year. Jack Anthony Major, who stood for the Lib Dems in Ashburton & Buckfastleigh last year. Lisa Collette Robillard Webb, who stood for Labour in the Bovey Ward last year. Michael Stuart-Hext, who did not stand last year. He is his own agent so maybe an independent. Pauline Angela Wynter, who stood for the Greens in the Bradley Ward last year.
So if no one has changed parties since and with a question mark over Michael Stuart-Hext, probably LD, Lab, Con, Grn, SDA, Heritage and 2 Ind.

People might be interested in some updates on the Birmingham Bournbrook by-election (as I've just got in from doing a stint of delivering). Virtually everyone seems active. We have ( as is our wont) put out a lot of literature, but I have seen leaflets from everyone except the Greens. The Tory literature attacks Labour's double whammy of high council tax and cuts to services. The WP and Socialist Alternative literature is similar although the WP makes more of Gaza and the SA attacks Labour for doing the Tories' dirty work for them. We've been out canvassing, so have the WP, and Labour have had big groups out I understand. Labour probably most active on social media, but unlike the South Yardley by-election a couple of years ago, that doesn't seem to be to disguise lack of activity on the ground. Part of the ward is very much student areas near Birmingham Uni, so turn out likely to be fairly low. Could ge a case of a relatively low number of votes needed to win, partly depending what traction the various far left groups get

In the run-up to next week’s 71 by-elections, I thought it might be worthwhile to take a comprehensive look at the candidates. Colleagues have listed candidates above for all the individual by-elections.
