The problem is the prediction competition forces you to 1) predict wards you don't know; 2) research said wards (the latter is especially boring. Wildly inaccurate perditions are going to be part and parcel of such a 'game'.

Well, here's a first, I think. Received today my latest "Focus" for Whickham North, Gateshead. Except that, on closer inspection, it's an election leaflet for a by-election that I knew nothing about. Sonia Hawkins, re-elected in May, has resigned, unknown to the council website where she is still listed as one of my Lib-Dem councillors.

Her designated replacement is former Low Fell councillor Susan Craig. She informs us that she is an Honorary Alderwoman, for "eminent service" to the borough. In my day this was automatically awarded to almost anyone who had done 10 years service, was retiring, and had no intention of ever standing again!

I'm beside myself with righteous indignation. Perhaps I'll seek the Labour nomination!?

In some places it's 15 years service, and we do occasionally see alder(wo)men standing as paper candidates.

A minutes silence has been held at Liberal Democrat conference in Brighton for Cllr Robin Bradburn of Bradwell ward, Milton Keynes, who has sadly passed away at conference.

Robin Bradburn was most recently re-elected in 2023 and was the leader of the opposition and Liberal Democrat group on the council. He previously also served as deputy leader of the council when the Lib Dems were the junior party in coalition with Labour.

Gutted.  I knew him well.  We were elected at the same time in 2010 and had similar political interests so were on similar committees, training sessions etc.  He was the one to take MK Lib Dems into successful coalition, and then back to 2nd party status for the first time in a decade.  He was deputy council leader until May.  

He also had significant roles in the local Lib Dem party, as well as encouraging both his wife and daughter to becoming successful Councillors themselves.  His wife Marie is the Mayor this year.  Absolutely rock solid and dependable, with that uncanny knack of finding a way through any disagreement that everyone could live with.  A huge legacy in Milton Keynes.  RIP.
