So none of the Lib Dem MPs who were incumbent councillors have resigned. I note that Vikki Slade said she didn't want to resign in order to save the taxpayer money. I would understand that argument being used for MPs like Brian Mathew who is on Wiltshire Council (up next May, but it's very absolute in her case, she's up in 2027.

That's an interesting one - being near me I was having a look at it. Labour went from 23% in 2019 to 51% in 2023, with a multi-recount battle for the second seat between a sitting councillor elected as Conservative and standing as Ind, and a challenging Conservative; in 2023 it was solidly 2xCon around 45% each.

The 2019 election had a full complement of parties, 2023 just one Lab and five Con+Ind/formerCon fighting it out, including the former Police Commissioner. Can't work out any way of approaching a prediction.

The seat is a bit weird as well. It's essentially just New Marske in the middle of nowhere, which looks like somebody accidently dropped a housing estate on a planning map and somebody went out and built it - but with a slice of the edge of old Marske several miles away.

There was one in the Isles of Scilly last year, after the returning officer attempted to set a Saturday polling date before finding out that you can't do that. Before then I don't know.

Oddly enough, the date was changed after I sent the Scilly Returning Officer an email asking why it had been set for a Saturday. I never received any reply or acknowledgment to the email, so I don’t know if there’s any connection. (If anything, I was expecting the reply to be that Scilly wasn’t included in the no-Saturday rule for some technical legal / geographical reason).

Why should they - it's only Labour who have rules against double hatting. There's a long tradition of their MPs being councillors - I think including John Hemming and Paul Burstow and ex Southport MP Ronnie Fearn who remained a councillor throughout his terms.

Are there such rules? I was genuinely unaware? How long is the period of grace? Would it keep until May?

A significant number of new Labour MP’s are councilors for an area they do not represent at Westminster, sometimes even in a different part of the UK.

Harold Steward was a Conservative Liverpool Councillor/Alderman for over 20 years from 1953 despite being MP for Stockport South from 1955 until 1964. Apparently he did not make a speech in Parliament. He did go on to lead the Council from 1967.

He was one of the thirteen MPs named in a 1963 That Was the Week That Was sketch as having not spoken in the Commons since the 1959 election.
