I noticed the name “London Fields” last week when I noticed it as the name of a railway station on my way back from Norfolk (it was a different route from my usual journey). I don’t remember noticing its existence before. It seems to be a ridiculously vague name/descriptionwhich presumably meant something more relevant hundreds of years ago. It's not that vague. Look at a map of the ward and the 'Fields' are slap bang in the middle of it bounded by Richmond Road and the Blackstone Estate. It's a perfectly sensible name for the ward. Cambridge Heath on the other hand, well where is the heath? Is there a Balsall Heath still? I've never seen pictures of one. But no, don't shit on London Fields as a name - it's a great area and I liked living on Well Street for the time that I did. They had wildflowers in London Fields when I lived there. I wasn’t referring to the name of the ward. I was referring to the name of the field. Presumably hundreds of years ago, somebody decided to call it “London Field” even though there must have been hundreds of fields in and around London.

It was multiple fields and still feels like that if you walk around as it's clearly demarcated; a lot like Highbury Fields. Contrast that with Bunhill Fields or Moorfields which were one and the same into the 19th century if memory serves and we now have the Moorfields eye hospital and until 2002 a Hackney ward called Moorfields.

London Fields was part of the route taking livestock to markets in the City. IIUC it was the last overnight grazing ground - thus the nearest field to the City of London which is presumably the source of the name.

Stoke Newington, of course, also has delightful open spaces including Abney Park and Stoke Newington Common if anyone is passing through or campaigning there.

How do you make the distinction between removed from the list of councillors and ceased to be a councillor? (I would assume none of the MPs have died without anyone but the council webmaster noticing.)

Anything marked as "removed" means that I've found no indication except that they have vanished from the list on the website. "ceased" is when I've found something to suggest there definitely is a vacancy - e.g. their ward is marked as vacant on the list, or there's a non-specific Notice of Vacancy or similar.

Perth & Kinross, Perth City North (2027). Brian Leishman (Labour) has been removed from the list of councillors. He is the new MP for Alloa & Grangemouth.
Seems like the word might have gone out for Labour double-hatters to give up their council seats.

I am not happy with using a non-proportional AV system to fill vacancies on councils who were originally elected using STV. It wouldn’t apply where list systems were employed for the original election. I think that they use co-option in Northern Ireland to fill vacancies from STV elected bodies.

Co-option gives the co-optee an unfair, unearned "incumbency" at the next election. I would only support co-option if the co-optee was barred from standing at the next election.

The "proper" way of filling vacancies in an STV election is to recount the original ballot papers, with the vacant councillor eliminated from the contest and their votes transferred accordingly (that is how I was elected to the Electoral Reform Society's Elections Panel (3 positions) having originally come 4th out of 5 candidates). Using AV to fill a casual vacancy in a public election is acceptable, because it is politically a good idea to use a fresh election to test the opinion of the electorate. The use of AV in Scottish local council by-elections is an example of political reality taking precedence over mathematical and theoretical purity.

Many years ago just after the introduction of STV for Edinburgh City Council, an SNP councillor resigned or died. It was a Labour-leaning Division with originally two Labour, one SNP, and (I think) one Conservative elected. Labour got two seats with around 40% of the vote. The by-election returned a Labour councillor giving them three out of four for the Division. Not very proportional!

That disproportionality (in by-elections for the Irish Dáil, as well as Scottish local councils) is one reason for not having by-elections by AV. Yet the political desire to have a fresh election is still more powerful despite that.
