On current polling, this seat is pretty marginal.

I would describe myself as a "nationalist unionist/unionist nationalist", yes. That's one of the reasons why my party name has been "Scottish Conservative" for donkey's years. That's not why I object though. I object because this is a candidate who refuses to say whether she'll be in the constituency to campaign, who has no connection to the constituency and, other than maybe her selection meeting, I'm not sure has ever been to the seat. Indeed, her main connection to Angus seems to be that she lived down in Edinburgh for a couple of years twenty years ago. Well, I'm sorry but that's not good enough. I get that she's doing this for her CV so that she can point to it at other selection meetings and processes elsewhere, I get how this works. But she needs to put in at least a little hard work, and in refusing to talk to the Dundee Courier, the main paper in these parts, to answer these questions she's failed the first test. For Heaven's sake, Roy Jenkins, a Welshman formerly in an English constituency, managed to be elected in Glasgow Hillhead. Keir Hardie, that Scottish firebrand, was MP for West Ham South and Merthyr Tydfil, with no local conections. The remarkable Dame Judith Hart, a Lancashire lass, was MP for Lanark, then Clydesdale, for 28 years. Glasgow's Pat McFadden, the Labour Campaign manager, has been MP for Wolverhampton South East for 19 years, and John Swinney speaks of him as someone he studied with in University of Edinburgh and could work with. Aberdonian Annalise Dodds, MP for Oxford East and Labour Party Chair. Coleraine man Tommy Sheppard, SNP MP for Edinburgh East since 2015. Dr Liam Fox of East Kilbride, MP for Woodspring and, now, North Somerset, had no prior connection. Then, the classic example of Dundonian George Galloway, MP for Glasgow Hillhead/Kelvin, then Bethnal Green & Bow, then Bradford West, now Rochdale, though he had no previous conmection to the latter three. So many more people from across the UK representing constituencies across the UK. They are not running for the local council. A valid point but it is also true that selecting a candidate with no prior connection to the area when an opposing party has selected a local candidate with strong ties to the area can and has resulted in seats being lost by that party. Ludlow in 2001 is a case in point.

On current polling, this seat is pretty marginal. If the Tories do win all of Aberdeenshire North & Moray East; Angus & Perthshire Glens; Berwickshire, Roxburgh & Selkirk; Dumfries & Galloway, Dumfiresshire, Clydedale & Tweeddale; Gordon & Buchan; Perthshire South & Kinross-shire; and West Aberdeenshire & Kincardine, then Scottish Conservatives could make up around 10% of the UK-wide parliamentary Conservative Party if current nationwide polls are correct. Even if current nationwide polling is wrong, Scottish Conservatives will probably make up their heftiest proportion of Tory MPs in decades. They could strongly influence the next Tory leadership election depending on whom they nominate and if they vote as a bloc.

I got Dan Peña's YouTube ads for months, which makes me think he's liable to breach spending limits here...

The Times (Scotland) has a lengthy piece on Pena in the paper today. Essentially, he's a madman who comes out with the most bewildering nonsense. I think it's worth quoting at length because it's almost unbelievable. It'll certainly make the hustings quite interesting that's for sure. "At the event, filmed earlier this year and seen by The Sunday Times, he delivered a series of inflammatory and expletive-filled diatribes while flanked by a Union flag and a saltire. Billing himself as “Laird Daniel S Peña Sr BS.” he appeared to suggest there would be violence if he was elected to parliament, stating: “I know how to get things done now and there’s always going to be collateral damage. “I hate the metaphor ‘You make an omelette, you crack eggs’. “There will be blood on the streets and some of your blood may be that blood. What are you willing to sacrifice?” He added: “Braveheart’s great in a movie but we don’t have any of you alive now. I’m bringing in gunslingers. They know how to get shit done.” Reacting to unease in the audience Peña said: “I can see the fear in your eyes”. “If anyone has the balls to lie and say it’s (voting for the SNP) worked out for you we ought to take you out around the barn and shoot you.” Peña then described the SNP as “brain dead” and lambasted the party’s supporters, stating: “Something is not right with you. You are f***ed up beyond all recognition”. He then focused his ire on Sturgeon, falsely claiming that she had imposed a “Gag order. An order from the courts that you can’t say anything bad about her, about her homosexuality etc”. “That’s why nobody has any balls to face her,” he said. “They would have burnt her at the stake. I still may burn her at the stake, metaphorically speaking. I can’t imagine why they didn’t come and drag her out of wherever she lives.” “I’m gonna drive a Sherman tank through the centre of parliament and crush anybody in my way,” he said. “Somebody has to pull the trigger. I like to pull triggers for real, but I’m gonna talk metaphorically... for now.” Bizarrely, Peña used the gathering to hurl insults at potential voters, describing local residents as “illiterates” and referring to the national hero William Wallace as a “thief, a crook and a bandit”. “Cuba’s got nothing on Scotland,” he said. “We’re just as corrupt. At least there they are afraid of getting assassinated.” Berating his audience he bellowed: “If I never see you again it’ll be too soon. If you want a friend, buy a goddamn dog. I’m just here to change your voting habit.” www.thetimes.com/uk/scotland/article/texan-tycoon-called-locals-illiterates-now-he-wants-to-be-their-mp-c5tdf37hv

This is some kind of performance art pastiche of Trump and not a genuine candidate, surely? (Said in hope rather than genuine belief)

I spent a few days in Blairgowrie on holiday. We had a leaflet through the door of the holiday apartment proclaiming "It's Stephen Kerr or the SNP".
Only other sign of an election was posters alongside some main roads campaigning for more expensive electricity (well actually against "monster" pylons).

(Said in hope rather than genuine belief) His actual business model of giving sort of "inspirational"/business seminars relies on much the same style of content - insulting the attendees, saying they're not good enough, etc. As I said above, he was pushing YouTube ads for months earlier this year (presumably targeting anyone in Scotland with a Google-identified interest in politics) and there is a sort of atrocity-tourism interest in watching them if you want to dive deeper. He has some political stuff on there, but it's mostly videos of him yelling at bewildered seminar attendees.

I trust the people of Blairgowrie and Brechin etc. to give him the risible vote he deserves.

Given this was the notional 2019 result, I think the Tories will take this. The boundaries are as good as the blue team could get here:
UK General Election, 2019 Notional Result: Angus and Perthshire Glens Party Candidate Votes % ±% SNP 28,509 50.4 Conservative 22,504 39.8 Liberal Democrats 2,803 5.0 Labour 2,402 4.2 Brexit Party 329 0.6 Majority 9,759 23.4 SNP gain from Conservative Swing +7.7
Looking at all the polling we've seen, and a range of projections, I think the Scottish Tories will gain three seats right now: this one, Moray West, Nairn & Strathspey, and Perth & Kinross-shire. I think they'll just miss out in Ayr, Carrick & Cumnock.
