Even leaving aside the issue of maternity hospitals, it is an incredibly stupid idea. It would make my mother eligible to stand in Bristol North West, where she hasn't lived since before she was able to walk, but not in the constituency where she's lived for the past 35 years. Clearly you missed the point where I said, “valid connection”.

Clearly a lot of people in the country are happy to have random parachute candidates standing as their local MP, who knew?

Clearly you missed the point where I said, “valid connection”. Please define "valid connection". Living/lived in the area for a certain period of time. Have a business in the area. Work/ have a job in area. Similar criteria that you have to pass to stand in the local elections ect.

Whatever the electorate/local membership deem them to be I guess. We decided we wanted someone who at least lived in the constituency here in Stroud. Gloucester obviously weren't fussy, but The Next Station Towards Bristol is probably local enough for most Gloucester voters. I highly doubt they'd consider someone from Bristol though.
Born and moved away is an interesting one. I think round here if a candidate had grown up here, moved away, come back for work and then got selected, that would be ok because the desire to move back would be seen as a compliment to the local area, but if you move back for the sole purpose of becoming parliamentary candidate, that might be less well received.
In Stroud of course, you can have lived all your life in the constituency and still not be considered "local" in some areas, but I suspect that's common to a lot of rural constituencies

Similar criteria that you have to pass to stand in the local elections ect. You don't have to live / work in the ward to stand at local elections, which is fortunate as many branches wouldn't be able to put up a candidate if it was so. Why should you have to live, work within a constituency to be an MP? Or or are you widening your area to beyond the Constituency now? Just trying to follow your logic

See Yorkshire County Cricket Club in the 1970s and 1980s. “Yes, we know you’ve lived here for years, learnt your cricket here and played for a local club. But you weren’t born here, so sorry but you’ll have to go and play for Lancashire or Derbyshire or some other less fussy county instead.” A cousin of my Mother lived in Manchester but was originally from Huddersfield . He deliberately drove his pregnant wife to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary rather than have the child born in Manchester so that she could give birth in Yorkshire and so their son could in theory play for Yorkshire.

Just trying to follow your logic Wards are a bit different I.e smaller. But to stand in that district, you have to be registered to vote in the area or have lived, worked, or owned property there for at least 12 months before an election.

Which is to say that they evidently don't think it's a deal breaker if a candidate isn't local.

All the 'old hands' on this Forum know that it is ever my principal concern 'to be popular with other posters', it has always governed my every action and comment on this Forum. Very percipient of you to have noticed that.

You assume that everyone is born (or lives/has a valid connection to) in a place that they like or care about. Certainly not the case for me... (Which, as a minor aside, put my nose out of joint when Labour's mayoral candidate up here started her pitch with "I love the North East and I know you do too" - no you don't!)
