Interesting that Reform are predicted to do well here because it doesn't seem like one of their best areas on paper . Ripon may well be more Reform friendly than most of the rest of the seat , being not that affluent and very white and somewhat parochial. It definitely falls outside the famous Harrogate and north Leeds 'golden triangle' of ostentatious wealth anyway. The problem with Ripon is that it doesn't have a train station. And poor public transport connections in general. If it did... more people would want to move there. We chose Knaresborough because of this (the presence of a train station), but paid a lot more money per square metre of floor area as a result.

I know Julian quite well. He was never a prat. One of the smartest guys I knew as an MP once said that Julian Smith was one of the few really capable MPs. He reckoned a large number of MPs were utterly useless I used to have the odd pint or two with him at the One Eyed Rat in Ripon. He's a real beer lover is Julian. I've canvassed for him a few times. He's a good lad I've encountered very briefly twice at hustings and he seems like a nice guy, shook my hand, asked if I was feeling better after I missed a third hustings due to a bug. I was wondering actually whether he would shake my hand as I had a bit of a public ding-dong with Andrew Jones in the neighbouring seat that I suspect he knows about. order-order.com/2024/05/14/tory-mp-found-in-breach-of-ipsa-code-while-embroiled-in-row-with-constituent/He also stuck around for quite a while after one of the hustings to chat to members of the public. I have to be frank, I find it very difficult to like Tory's, but he seems like one of the more likeable ones. This is why I don't think he'll lose his seat, there isn't enough general animosity towards him in the constituency, I think he'll cling on for another term. Yeah.....he'll win. And yes, he is a very polite and friendly guy

Not only does it not have a railway station, it doesn't even have a turning and main road off the motorway!

Yeah.......you need to get out more. And it's 'Tories' by the way Just to clarify, it was very clumsily worded on my part, but what I actually meant is that I've not found the other Tory MPs I've encountered very likeable, albeit that has been half a dozen at most. I am on friendly terms with many Conservative Party members, voters, and even 2024 General Election candidates. Including of course a couple who were previously in the Yorkshire Party who are standing in your neck of the woods!

As it happens, the most leaflets I ever delivered in one day was 1,421 in Bensham Manor ward in Croydon in January 2007. I had 1,600 with me, and delivered 1,421 in 10 hours from 7am to 5pm. The only constraint which stopped me doing more was that it got too dark for me to see properly where the letterboxes were. Mine were only size A6, so even 1,600 of them only weighed 2kg to start with. Funnily enough I took exactly 1600 with me. When I got on the train home I counted and I had 178 leaflets left. However I remember throwing a couple of leaflets in the bin on the day for being cut oddly by the printers, so I can't claim to have beaten your record by 1 leaflet, instead it sounds like you have beat me by 1 leaflet! If I'd seen another house or two on the way back to the train station I would have leafleted, but I was physically exhausted by that point, the aim was to do all 1600 but my body wouldn't let me. Your achievement is more impressive than mine because my leaflets were only 1.25g each (A6, 80gsm). Yours were much heavier. As it happens, most of the bundles of leaflets I've had to deliver this time have been 20g (A3, 160gsm) which are bad enough even when there's only 200 of them.

In the interests of pedantry, it does - J50 for the A61 (the next one after the one I suspect you took, J49 at Dishforth, which does end up on some country lanes into Ripon.)

Travelling north, the signage tells you to turn off at Junction 48 and follow the local access road for several miles to the B6265. If you turn off at Junction 49 there's no way to go West, you have to go several miles to Topcliffe and turn around. If you go all the way to Junction 50 to the A61, you're then doubling back on yourself an even longer distance.

It did have a wonderful stone railway station in an imposing position and I have met someone off a steam train there. As to the rest of the comment : That is the very charm of the place and should not be altered at all; just like Masham.

Yeah.......you need to get out more. And it's 'Tories' by the way Indeed so dear friend. Three grievous errors. Firstly the very use of Tory. I am a Tory but the vast majority are mainly conservatives. And many of those are mere fellow traveller social democrat wets. Then the incorrect plurality. And the employ of a greengrocer's apostrophe!

Indeed, you are doubling back on yourself at J50, but at least it is a proper standard A road, not a country lane!

J49 used to be the location of the notorious Dishforth roundabout, which snarled up traffic on A1 north and south, and for which A168 narrowed to single carriageway on approach. However, there was access to the minor road through Sharow which was actually signed to Ripon and we used it often.

Always known to me as exclusively a greengrocer's because they were on the street with displays or in the open or street markets.

But that also shows that the B6265 used to be a direct turn-off from the A1 to Ripon.

Yes, there was a non-roundabout junction. The A61 junction was, however, another roundabout.
