Just to clear this one up: Ladywood 1918-50 Ladywood 1950-55 Ladywood 1955-74 Ladywood 1974-83 The Boundary Commission love the name, but arguing for meaningful continuity is... tricky.

Had they persisted with that nonsense, it should have been renamed Birmingham, Strip.

This is now the third most muslim constituency in the country following the substantial boundary changes, but few of the non-muslim half are likely to vote for Yakoob, although their turnout will be lower. Labour will need to work this, and emphasise that Shabana Mahmood is likely to be the most senior muslim in the new Labour cabinet.

That's going to be a unwise choice for him.

Labour should not be complacent in relation to the Galloway/Independent candidates in Birmingham. That said, the general election is very different to the Mayoral or local elections however. The turnout will be higher and a different question is being asked, who do you want to run the country? Knocking up last week it is clear that there are no communities in the city that just vote as a block.
The Independent candidates are running a populist campaign that can get some traction in low turnout, low priority elections. It’s harder in the general election but if nothing else they are going to drain Labour resources from other more ostensibly marginal target seats.

Historian and Birmingham legend Carl Chinn launched Shabana Mahmood‘s campaign today in Birmingham city centre. Speaking in favour of her and against the independent Yakoob, who he spoke strongly against as a disreputable character under investigation by the Solicitors Regulation Authority.

Chinn is my former next door neighbour. Professional Brummie par excellence. But knows his onions where local history is concerned.

Chinn is my former next door neighbour. Professional Brummie par excellence. But knows his onions where local history is concerned. He made a point of saying he was not party political and not a Labour Party member. But felt compelled to make an intervention in this election because of the circumstances. Truly excellent speaker, miles better than any of the politicians that spoke, the whole room hung on every word.

I have a sneaky feeling this seat goes independent to Akhmed Yakoob. No data apart from mayoral election results but online campaign seems to be very positive for him

I have a sneaky feeling to the contrary. I'm not hearing particularly alarming signals at this stage

It will be a close run thing but I suspect she will hang on by a couple of thousand votes.

I've seen (albeit n very different seats) at local level Labour make a lot of noise online but actually do very little on the ground and make little headway.
