At the request of an old friend, I just led the D-Day service at the Hazel Grove Remembrance garden. It was lovely. In attendance were Paul Athans (Tory candidate) and Claire Vibert (Labour candidate. I had a chat with them both. Paul Athans, a retired major, though a young fellow, was bullish saying his experience of canvassing didn't match the polls and people said they voted Lib Dem for the locals, but would vote for him in the General. The look on the face of the young lady with him told a somewhat different story. Claire Vibert, who turns out to be a former parishioner from Accrington and is a Stockport councillor, was quite upbeat too saying, in her case, that the polls were being reflected on the doorstep, and that the addition of Manor to the constituency gave them hope. I am pretty sure that they are not even fooling themselves, but the local Royal British Legion secretary said afterwards that he has voted Lib Dem tactically to keep the Tories out for years, but feels he can vote Labour now, so maybe some idea is getting through, though that would possibly cheer the Tories up if it depresses the Lib Dem vote. I still see Lisa Smart gaining it for the Lib Dems, as the Tory vote seems down. I was surprised she didn't turn up this morning, but she probably had a timetable clash. Saw a few posters for Lisa Smart on Dialstone Road.
I hadn't realised that Labour now has six local councillors in the constituency (Offerton, Manor and Bredbury & Woodley), so a proper campaign for Labour might be a good idea.

I could see this becoming a three way marginal in the not too distant future.

I could see this becoming a three way marginal in the not too distant future. And not just because of the addition of the Labour-friendly Manor ward either-Hazel Grove has always had a larger natural Labour vote than Cheadle despite also being a classic Conservative-Liberal Democrat marginal.

That Labour vote in Hazel Grove was traditionally concentrated in Bredbury and Woodley. In recent reviews the addition of Offerton and now Manor has tilted that somewhat. The problem will be to break the spell of tactical Lib-Dem voting by middle class Labour-leaning voters in Marple and Romiley. This will not be an easy task until it can be demonstrated that Labour will be competitive. And they will not become competitive as long as tactical voting persists.

It might help that the Labour candidate lives in Marple, but it is a hard sell for those who have spent years tactical voting.

Drove through Hazel Grove yesterday. Quite a few LD posters. Didn’t see a single one for anyone else. Continuing through Cheadle, lots of LD posters, 3 Lab and none for anyone else.

She is having a bit of a 'mare - she upset some potential voters at a hustings when, in response to a question about the climate, she said people should have fewer children as it was bad for the environment, stating she had none, right after the Lab candidate spoke of her 3 children.

Criticising the Tory for not having been born there is a particularly ridiculous idea. Ultra-localism taken to its absurd conclusion. Quite why the local Lib Dems have kept her around over the years is baffling. She's...just not very good.

I don't know much about her, but so far I'm not impressed. Needs to get her head in the game.

She had a constituency office in Romiley, of the old school with a proper shopwriter job over the top. It was never clear if it was just a shop unit that belonged to the Lib Dems anyway, or if she rented it- weird for a councillor to have one, as it was always there (last time I was up there was just after lockdown admittedly, but that obviously long after the last Westminster vote). She's probably a classic of the type- the councillor you wish didn't have ambition.

Only saving grace is that if there‘s one place you‘ll get away with insulting Liverpool, it’s in Greater Manchester.
I hear they are less than complimentary about the Mancs in Liverpool too…..

It was quite an amusing quip. Not very original maybe, but it was a spontaneous one-liner. People need to stop apologising for this kind of thing - its like being in a fucking primary school

When I was small, and I had done something wrong, I was told "say you're sorry". So I used to reply "my sorry"

I'm glad she's apologised. In the age of Ring camera doorbells you've got to be so careful. I'm not certain there is a nice way to tell someone with an accent "here's a slur I want you to hear".
At least she's gone back to apologise.

Ooft. Maybe we can not see this as a LD win then.

Lisa Smart is a perfectly good candidate, and I'm sure she will be a perfectly good MP.
